Time to Shut Down Chain Migration

Press Releases · Jan 22, 2018

Washington—According to reports, the third day of the partial federal government shutdown could also be the last. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) stated last night that it would be his “intention to proceed to legislation that would address DACA, border security, and related issues” if those issues are not resolved by February 8, 2018. It remains unclear if congressional Democrats will continue to oppose funding the government unless the bill also includes amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants. Heritage Action released the following statement from Chief Executive Officer Michael A. Needham:

“As Congress continues to discuss and potentially act on legislation that addresses the status of 690,000 DACA recipients, it must not ignore the elephant in the room: chain migration. With this shutdown, congressional Democrats made clear they believe in sweeping amnesty for illegal immigrants and a path to citizenship for their distant relatives. That is a non-starter.
“We should have an immigration system that allows people into America based on merit. Any future immigration discussions should include a permanent end to family-based chain migration by eliminating green card programs for relatives other than spouses and minor children. That is how we begin building an immigration policy that makes sense for 325 million Americans.”
