Heritage Action Announces Key Vote ‘No’ if Senate Votes to Avoid Mayorkas Trial

Press Releases · Apr 8, 2024

WASHINGTON—Heritage Action, a conservative grassroots organization with two million activists nationwide, today released the following statement from Executive Vice President Ryan Walker announcing a Key Vote ‘No’ if Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer moves to table or dismiss the impeachment of U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas:

“The border crisis, which was created and facilitated by this administration, is now the number one concern of Americans. Lawmakers who claim that impeaching Secretary Mayorkas is a waste of time or the Senate is too busy to hold a trial are not only absurd, they’re massively out-of-touch with the voters who sent them to Washington.

“If Chuck Schumer wants to hide evidence and rob Americans of their chance to hold Mayorkas accountable—his party will have to answer to the people at the ballot box. Anyone who does Schumer’s bidding and votes to dismiss or table will be complicit in his coverup and the border crisis itself. Senators who would rather focus on the terrible bills Schumer has put forward instead of holding a trial for Mayorkas cannot be trusted by conservatives.

“Heritage Action stands with Americans demanding accountability and will Key Vote any procedural move put forth to sweep the charges against Mayorkas under the rug.”

Former DHS Acting Deputy Chief of Staff Lora Ries, now director of The Heritage Foundation’s Border Security and Immigration Center, said:

"As the flights of inadmissible aliens directly into the U.S. have shown, Mayorkas has worked mightily to hide his open border operations and refusal to enforce immigration law from the American people. The illegal immigration crisis we face is a direct result of his handiwork—and holding Mayorkas accountable with a trial should not be remotely controversial for conservative lawmakers.

“Sadly, Congress voted a few weeks ago to keep funding his mass illegal immigration machine. Americans deserve to see how Mayorkas is spending their tax dollars to fund an invasion. In this clear case, senators have a constitutional duty to hold a real impeachment trial, publicly examine the evidence, and act in the best interests of their constituents. Voting to table or dismiss is a violation of that duty, an endorsement of the border crisis Mayorkas has created, and would further his coverup."

Supported by analysis from border policy and legal scholars at The Heritage Foundation, Heritage Action has called for the impeachment of Sec. Mayorkas for more than a year. Heritage Action’s nationwide network of two million grassroots conservatives drove thousands of calls to congressional offices, culminating with the impeachment of Sec. Mayorkas in the House of Representatives.

Due to the catastrophe at the border caused by the Biden administration, the number of Americans who support tougher immigration restrictions has been steadily increasing. Three-fourths of Americans—a bipartisan majority—now believe the situation at the border is ‘a crisis’ or ‘very serious,’ while only 7% view it as ‘not much of a problem.’

Heritage Action strongly supports H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act, as the only solution to securing the border and ending the Biden-designed invasion that’s exacerbating the drug, crime, and cost of living crises impacting Americans in every state.
