What Motivates the Left to Protect Everything But People?
The left’s vision for America has failed us. All too often, the left puts the interests of special interest groups before the American people’s needs. Such is quite obviously the case in the energy sector. Lobbying groups and special interest groups in the green energy sector have a vested financial interest in seeing the decline of oil and gas production. Liberal politicians bow to their demands, and often, to the demands of radical environmentalists.
And these special interest groups put their money where their mouth is. In 2013, the combined campaign contributions of some of the top lobbying groups in the alternative energy industry amounted to $15,287,158, according to OpenSecrets.org.
Moreover, the Heritage Foundation notes:
In Pennsylvania, scientists report that with “fracking” techniques to extract natural gas and reduce U.S. dependency on foreign oil, the “typical Marcellus shale well generates about $4 million in economic benefits while generating only $14,000 in economic damages from environmental impacts” (a ratio of 1:285). Yet environmentalists oppose it and have hijacked media outlets like The New York Times to run biased reports against fracking’s key contributions to America’s current and future energy supplies that would be a tremendous catalyst for the country’s economic recovery.
But one need look no further than President Obama and his administration’s botched attempts at foisting green energy technologies on the American people at taxpayer expense even though they were not viable in the free market.
Unfortunately, the left continues its assault on American prosperity through unnecessary regulations on fracking coming out of Washington.
The Conservative Response
In an effort to increase energy production and promote American jobs, Rep. Bill Flores (R-TX) 83% introduced the Protecting States’ Rights to Promote American Energy Security Act (H.R. 2728). We are in favor of this legislation (key vote) because as conservatives we believe in the free market and limited government, and the bill conforms to both of those principles.
The bill would prohibit the Interior Department from regulating hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” on federal land in any state that already regulates the practice. Indeed, thanks to excessive federal regulation, the productivity of oil and gas production has declined in some states even as production on private and state land skyrockets.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) 100% attributes an effort by the Interior Department’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to finalize a rule placing more stringent federal regulations on fracking to the efforts of radical environmentalists. The Washington Free Beacon reports:
Interior’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which oversees the nearly 650 million acres of land owned by the federal government, withdrew 100,000 acres in Utah from an oil and gas permitting auction this week.
That move drew criticism from Sen. Mike Lee (R., Utah), who said BLM was acting as “a vehicle for policies created by radical environmentalists.”
Indeed, what may be most frustrating about the federal government’s behavior is that fracking has been proven to be environmentally safe, and the states have successfully and efficiently taken steps for decades to balance the needs of protecting the environment with producing energy.
This won’t be the first or the last time liberals whose pockets are lined by the money of special interest groups will kowtow to their demands. But they’ll be hurting the American people in the process. But what else can you expect from an ideological group that puts the needs of bugs before those of people?
