The Best of the Forge
Today at a Heritage Bloggers Briefing, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) made it clear that what is absolutely essential if conservatives are to win the fight to defund Obamacare is a grassroots army.
No politician in Washington can win this fight… The entirety of this strategy is the grassroots.
Sen. Cruz explained that if we wait on the Washington Establishment to do their thing, we won’t get the desired result. Instead, we need hundreds of thousands of individuals across the country to motivate either 41 Senators or 218 Representatives to insist on defunding Obamacare on the forthcoming continuing resolution.
Given the news and internal gamesmanship, conservatives would be wise to ask what the end game is for this strategy outlined by the two papers. Right now leadership is keeping that strategy relatively quiet, which means the rank-and-file members are in the dark. Before going home to meet with constituents for five weeks, it is important those members understand their leadership’s plan on immigration.
How do rank-and-file members respond when asked: Why is the House pushing to go to conference with the Senate-passed amnesty, a bill House leaders acknowledge is dead on arrival?
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) has made it clear that he disagrees with the conservative strategy to defund Obamacare. Unfortunately, now he is taking aim at a different strategy that simply does not exist. Today he announced that a government shutdown would not defund Obamacare. With all due respect to Senator Coburn, that is not news.
In fact, it is common knowledge, which is why those pushing to defund Obamacare are also pushing to fund the government. In short, Sen. Coburn has constructed a straw man argument to fight his fellow conservatives, thereby preserving Obamacare.
As conservatives we are the first to explain that Obamacare is a failure. But we’re not the only ones who know this. Most Americans – regardless of occupation, political affiliation, ideology, or demographic background – don’t want Obamacare. More and more Democrats feel the same way. That’s why for the next couple months, we are going to push the Washington Establishment to get on the same page as the rest of America. Our specific task is to get Congress to understand that they must – must – defund Obamacare on the upcoming Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the government.
The Pew Research Center recently produced statistics indicating that young adults are living in their parents’ home in increasing numbers. The numbers should concern young adults (young men specifically), their parents and every Americans because they are a prism through which we can see the degradation of our society that results from big-government policies. What’s causing young people to decide to live at home? Employment and marriage are on the decline and college enrollment is on the rise.
