Senators Have a Final Chance to Protect Religious Liberty

Press Releases · Nov 29, 2022

WASHINGTON – Today, Heritage Action, a conservative grassroots organization with two million grassroots activists, released a statement from Executive Director Jessica Anderson urging the U.S. Senate to fight for religious liberty ahead of today’s final vote on the so-called “Respect for Marriage Act.”

“The U.S. Senate today has a final chance to protect religious liberty by opposing the deceptively named ‘Respect for Marriage Act.’ Not only is this legislation unnecessary, but it also creates an opportunity for the Left to weaponize the federal government against individuals and organizations who have moral and religious objections to their social agenda.

At a minimum, Senators should insist that Senator Mike Lee’s amendment to protect religious liberty be included in the final bill. As the Left slowly chips away at religious liberty and conservative values, the American people deserve leaders who will protect individuals of faith from targeted persecution and punishment.

Especially during a lame-duck session of Congress, conservative Senators must stay accountable to the views of their constituents. Recent polling from The Heritage Foundation indicates that the underlying bill is unpopular among many Americans due to its redefinition of marriage and attacks on religious liberty. Given this lack of support for the bill, the lack of protections for religious Americans, and the consideration of this significant proposal during a lame-duck session, conservative Senators should steadfastly oppose this bill as written and insist on Sen. Lee’s amendment.”
