Senate Should Oppose Pro-Abortion Shaheen Amendment

Press Releases · Oct 29, 2019

Washington — Heritage Action for America released the following statement by Executive Director Tim Chapman in regards to a new amendment to appropriations legislation from Senator Jeanne Shaheen:

This summer, lawmakers compromised to raise the debt limit and budget caps. Many Republicans agreed to the deal on the condition that no poison pills or major policy riders would be attached to appropriations bills.

A new provision added to appropriations legislation by Senator Jeanne Shaheen would blatantly violate that agreement. The amendment would provide $665 million for "family planning and reproductive health care," including funding for the U.N. Population Fund, which supports China's inhumane abortion policies. This language violates the bipartisan budget agreement by directing funds to abortion providers and population-control initiatives, effectively propping up the abortion industry with federal funds. Senators should reject the Shaheen poison pill, and any other poison pill introduced in the future, and stay true to their word.

Heritage Action reserves the right to key vote against any poison pills or other violations of the summer's bipartisan agreement.
