Ohio Measure to Raise Threshold for Constitutional Amendments Will Protect Citizens Against Partisan Special Interests

Press Releases · Dec 1, 2022

WASHINGTON – Today, Heritage Action, a conservative grassroots organization with two million grassroots activists, including thousands of Ohioans, released a statement from Executive Director Jessica Anderson supporting the proposal to increase the threshold to amend the state’s constitution to 60%.

“Ohio’s proposal to increase the threshold to amend the state constitution will protect Ohioans from short-sighted partisan special interests and promote a stronger model for good governance.

While there are other avenues for concerned citizens to change laws or voice their opinions, amending the state constitution is serious business. Any changes to the state constitution should be subject to serious debate and agreement from a broad supermajority of Ohioans. Simply put, if a proposal is not popular enough for 60% of Ohioans to support, it should not be enshrined in the state’s constitution.

Heritage Action fully supports this bill’s passage and applauds Ohio Rep. Brian Stewart and Secretary of State Frank LaRose for their work to reform the amendment process for Ohio’s state constitution.”
