North Carolina General Assembly Returns Rights to Women, Children, and Parents by Overriding Governor Cooper’s Vetoes

Press Releases · Aug 17, 2023

WASHINGTON – Heritage Action, a conservative grassroots organization with two million grassroots activists, including thousands of North Carolinians, released the following statement from Acting Executive Director Ryan Walker commending the North Carolina General Assembly for overturning Governor Roy Cooper’s veto of HB 574, HB 808, and SB 49, legislation that safeguards women’s sports, protects children from receiving experimental surgeries and dangerous cross-sex hormones, and ensures parents have the right to direct the upbringing and education of their children.

“In a time where the Left attempts to control every facet of government and the everyday lives of American citizens, it’s important for conservatives to fight to maintain the rights and values that built the United States. Radical gender ideology poses a threat to children suffering from gender confusion and their lifelong health, parents who want to raise their children according to their values, and women’s ability to compete in sports against other women. By overturning Governor Roy Cooper’s veto, the North Carolina General Assembly upholds legislation that requires athletes only compete against those of their biological sexes, protects children from medical harm by banning the practice and recommendation of experimental surgeries and cross-sex hormones, and ensures parents have the right to direct the upbringing and education of their children.

By vetoing HB 574, HB 808, and SB 49, Governor Cooper has shown that he prioritizes a left-wing political agenda over the rights of North Carolinians. Heritage Action commends the North Carolina General Assembly for overriding Governor Cooper’s vetoes and combating the harms of gender ideology. We look forward to working alongside grassroots Americans across the country to stand up for women, children, and parents against the Left.”
