Washington - Over the past two days, Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) reaffirmed their commitment to allowing the U.S. Export-Import Bank to expire. Their comments, along with public opposition from at least eight committee chairmen, signals significant and growing opposition to the bank. Heritage Action released the following statement from chief executive officer Michael A. Needham:
"The Republican-controlled House is on the verge of delivering a major victory for hardworking Americans. Ensuring the Export-Import Bank is allowed to expire on June 30 will send the signal that Republicans are willing to change Washington and fight for those who are rightly frustrated with Washington's self-help agenda. We should get back to advancing opportunity for all and let Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Elizabeth Warren carry the water for those seeking corporate welfare and political favoritism."
Committee chairmen publicly opposed include Agriculture Chairman Rep. K. Conaway (R-TX), Budget Chairman Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), Energy & Commerce Chairman Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), Financial Services Chairman Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Foreign Affairs Chairman Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Oversight & Government Reform Chairman Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), Small Business Chairman Rep. Steven Chabot (R-OH), and Ways & Means Chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI).
