Kansas Senate Stands up for Parents’ Rights, Overrides Governor Kelly’s Vetoes

Press Releases · Apr 26, 2022

WASHINGTON – Today, Heritage Action, a conservative organization with two million grassroots activists nationwide, including thousands of Kansans, released a statement from Executive Director Jessica Anderson applauding the Kansas Senate for overriding Governor Laura Kelly’s vetoes of SB 48 and SB 160, bills to create a Parents’ Bill of Rights and protect women’s sports.

Kansans have spoken and they reject Governor Kelly’s attempts to keep parents out of their children’s education. While the Left tries to use public education to indoctrinate young students with radical CRT curriculum or gender ideology lessons, parents deserve oversight and accountability in their children’s schools.

We commend the Kansas Senate for overriding the Governor’s vetoes to demand a Parents’ Bill of Rights and protections for women’s sports, and we encourage the Kansas House to join them in their fight.

Background:

  • The Kansas Senate voted 27-12 to override Governor Kelly’s veto of SB 58. To fully override the veto, the Kansas House will also need to vote on the measure.

  • If enacted, SB 58 would require all school districts to create a Parents’ Bill of Rights and provide parents with transparency surrounding student lesson plans and curriculum.

  • The legislation also clarifies the rights of the parents to “direct the upbringing and moral or religious training of the parent’s child.”

  • SB 160 would require that student athletic teams be based on biological sex unless otherwise designated as co-ed.

  • In August 2021, Heritage Action announced the launch of Save Our Schools, an initiative to support parents’ rights to fight for the values of their children and weed out Critical Race Theory and its divisive teachings.
