Heritage Action: Gov. Whitmer’s Election Integrity Vetoes Tell Michigan She Has No Interest in Securing Their Vote

Press Releases · Oct 29, 2021

WASHINGTON — Today, Heritage Action, a national conservative grassroots organization, released a statement from Executive Director Jessica Anderson in response to Michigan Gov. Whitmer's veto of SB 303, SB 304, and HB 5007, three bills aimed at securing Michigan’s elections.

It’s unfortunate to see Governor Whitmer veto these bills that would make it easy to vote and hard to cheat in the state of Michigan. These bills include common-sense voter ID requirements—nearly 80% of Michiganders support voter ID, why is Governor Whitmer actively working against the will of the people? These vetoes tell her constituents that she has no interest in securing their vote.

Heritage Action stands with the Michigan lawmakers who have worked tirelessly to secure their state’s elections and we will continue to support efforts to secure Michigan’s elections.

Background:

The legislation includes provisions that would:

  • Require that all voters provide proper identification when voting in person. Voters who fail to provide photo ID will instead be issued provisional ballots.

  • Require anyone applying for an absentee ballot to provide an official Michigan driver’s license number or personal identification card number, the last four digits of a social security number, a photocopy of such identification, or present proper identification to a clerk in person in order to verify their identity and receive an absentee voter ballot.

  • Provide free ID to anyone who needs one.

  • Prevent the mass unsolicited mailing of absentee ballot applications.

  • Prohibit private funding of election officials and government agencies.
