COVID “Relief” Package Fails in Senate Following Heritage Action Key Vote

Press Releases · May 20, 2022

WASHINGTON — Today, Heritage Action, a conservative grassroots organization with two million grassroots activists, released a statement from Executive Director Jessica Anderson following the failure of S. 4008, the Small Business COVID Relief Act of 2022 in a 43-52 vote and Heritage Action’s key vote against the legislation.

At a time when Americans are facing record-setting inflation, the Left’s solution is to spend more taxpayer money and help out their own special interests.

The time for true COVID relief has come and gone – this legislation would simply take more of the taxpayers’ money and bail out blue states and cities for the harm they caused to their businesses due to the Left’s draconian shutdowns. What businesses and taxpayers need now are sound, conservative policies to help the economy bounce back and bring down historic inflation rates. This is not achieved through increasing taxes or dumping billions more dollars into the economy, but through cutting spending, addressing the national debt, and incentivizing workers to return to work.

Heritage Action key voted against this legislation because American taxpayers deserve better than flawed corporate bailouts during a time of economic crisis. We thank the Senators who voted against this legislation and stood up for fiscal responsibility, fairness in spending, and the future of American families.

Background:

  • Members’ votes on this legislation will be reflected on Heritage Action’s Scorecard.

  • As outlined in the key vote alert, this legislation would have spent $48 billion on corporate bailouts when the American people are suffering from record-setting inflation rates.

  • The federal government has already spent $6.6 trillion on COVID relief – the equivalent of $51,600 per household.

  • The record inflation levels are due largely to uncontrolled government spending, costing the average American household around $8,500 per year.
