Conservatives Should Oppose the Senate’s Unserious Supplemental Package

Press Releases · Dec 6, 2023

WASHINGTON—Ahead of the first procedural vote expected in the Senate on legislation fulfilling President Joe Biden’s bloated supplemental spending request, Heritage Action Executive Vice President Ryan Walker released the following statement:

“Conservatives cannot support the Senate’s unserious, unaccountable, unrelated supplemental spending package. This legislation, crafted entirely by the chamber’s far-Left majority, sticks taxpayers with another $110.5 billion in reckless spending, most of which will be shipped overseas with zero accountability for Americans.

“This legislation fails in every measure. First, after the House responsibly passed needed aid for Israel, our greatest ally in the Middle East, the Chuck Schumer Senate refused to take up the bill for weeks—opting instead to continue the deficit spending that’s crushed American families through inflation. Second, the Senate bill combines aid for Israel with taxpayer funding for Gaza, where it almost certainly will be stolen by Hamas terrorists. Third, the package includes billions more in assistance to Ukraine without the strategy, accountability, or oversight Americans deserve.”

“Last, and probably least, this administration’s request for more money to continue its disastrous immigration policies is an insult to the millions of Americans impacted by the Biden border disaster. Without meaningful policy changes—which the Left refuses to entertain—this money will be nothing but a slush fund for Biden to exacerbate the security, humanitarian, and crime crisis he’s created at our southern border.

“Instead of debating each issue individually for their voters to see, lawmakers tied billions of dollars together into one bill—all in hopes of hiding bad policies behind buzz words like ‘border’ and ‘national security.’ While we are glad the Left is suddenly interested in security and actually able to admit we have a border, their bill will do nothing to keep Americans safe. Heritage Action will issue a Key Vote ‘No’ if this package reaches a final vote—not a single conservative can support this legislation.”
