"YES" on Disapproval of EPA's Cross Border Regulations
This week, the Senate could vote on S.J. Res. 27, a joint resolution disapproving a rule submitted by the Environmental Protection Agency relating to the mitigation by states of cross-border air pollution under the Clean Air Act. The rule requires 28 states and the District of Columbia, many of which rely on coal for electric generation, to reduce power plant emissions that could cross state lines; emissions which Northeastern and mid-Atlantic states blame for poor air quality. However, existing rules are in place to address the issue.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the rule will increase electricity costs and annual compliance costs will surpass $1 billion. It is likely to force the shuttering of coal-fired power plants, reducing electricity output, increasing costs and destroying jobs. These unnecessary regulations will only add to the heavy burden the Environmental Protection Agency is already placing on electricity producers, which are increasing rates for families and manufacturers and forcing companies to lay off employees.
