This week the Senate is expected to vote on the nomination of Thomas Perez to serve as Secretary of Labor.

Thomas Perez is the current head of the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice. During his tenure, he has amassed a radically liberal track record and demonstrated he does not believe in the equal application of the laws.

A recent Inspector General report on the Voting Section of the Civil Rights Division reveals Perez resorted to harassment and intimidation of those lawyers that did not agree with his liberal world view. His questionable conduct extended to his handling of cases in his division as well. In an ethically questionable quid pro quo, Perez convinced the City of St. Paul, MN to drop a case that threatened the "disparate impact" legal theory while at the same time the Justice Department dropped two claims against the city in a False Claims Act Case.

His action in labor cases leaves little doubt as to how he would run the Department of Labor. Perez filed an anti-religious liberty brief in a Supreme Court case arguing against the ability of churches to hire individuals they choose. He took the Fire Department of New York to court because their written test for admission to the fire academy did not yield what he considered proper results and in the process actually blocked minority candidates from being admitted.

If that were not enough, he has also threatened local swimming pools with fines if they do not install mechanical lift chairs and opposed removing ineligible voters from the voting rolls.

Perez's past actions are alarming, especially given that he will be leading the Labor Department, and should not be confirmed.

Heritage Action opposes the nomination of Thomas Perez and reserves the right to include any and all votes related to it as a key vote in our legislative scorecard.
