Fun with SOPA and PIPA!

Blog Articles · Jan 22, 2012

Last week, we talked a lot about the now-stalled stalled Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA). Let's be clear, there's nothing fun about censorship of the internet. What is fun is translating the acronyms SOPA and PIPA to see what they mean in other languages.

SOPA:

Sofa in Filipino

Sip in Icelandic

Soap in Irish

Soup in Portuguese and Spanish

Whisper in Romanian

Cluster in Slovenian

Sweep in Swedish

Stick in Turkish

PIPA:

Pipe in Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Maltese, Romanian, Spanish, and Swedish

Chimney in Norwegian

Kite in Portuguese

Faucet in Serbian and Slovenian

Barrel in Swahili

Ripa(?) in Welsh

My personal favorite is that SOPA means "cluster" in Slovenian. What is yours?
