This Week in Congress: January 27 — 31

Analysis:  This week the House may consider a bill prohibiting taxpayer funding for abortion.  The Heritage Foundation notes, “At the federal level, Congress can enact broad protections against taxpayer funding of abortion and abortion coverage. The No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act (H.R. 7) would assure that no funds authorized or appropriated by federal law could be used to pay for abortion or health benefits plans that cover abortion. Congress could also demand transparency in Obamacare exchange plans.”

The House may also consider the food stamp and farm bill.  As we have said consistently, both the food stamp program and agriculture programs are in desperate need of reform.  These vital reforms have not yet been enacted, which means this bill would harm taxpayers and consumers.   To put the profound need for reform in perspective, even President Obama wants to reform the federal crop insurance program in a more fiscally responsible way than the House of Representatives.

Analysis:  This week the Senate may consider a bill to extend unemployment insurance benefits.  The Heritage Foundations explains how extending these benefits would harm the very workers it is allegedly intended to help, and they state, “Economists have consistently found that they prolong workers’ job searches, raising the unemployment rate.”

Major Floor Action

  • S.1926 – the Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act
  • S.1845 – Emergency Unemployment Compensation Extension Act
