When Obamacare Premiums Are Higher Than Your Mortgage Payment

*The individual did not want to be personally identified but to remain anonymous; for the purposes of relaying her story, we’ve called her Jen here.

Jen and her husband, North Carolina residents, selected a health insurance plan that had a low monthly premium.  The Blue Advantage Saver offered by Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of North Carolina worked for them and fit their needs.

They received a letter dated September 24, 2013 that said, “We value your continued membership and want to let you know about some changes.”

But Jen found that the letter was about more than “some changes” as she read through the infuriating letter.  The letter outlined the three key ways her health care plan would be affected “due to the ACA regulations.”  Her BCBS plan would no longer be offered in 2014 because it did not match up to Obamacare requirements; it its stead, they offered her a “new plan that both meets the guidelines of the ACA and offers all the features you’re used to from BCBS.”

The letter added, “to make it easy for you, we have transitioned you to a plan that most closely matches the benefits of your 2013 plan.”

Monthly Premium Under Obamacare More Costly Than Monthly Mortgage Payment

There was just one problem with the suggested plan, the Blue Advantage Bronze.  It was way more expensive.  In fact, Jen told said that the new premium was more than her monthly mortgage payment for her home.

Monthly Premium Total Deducible
Before $291.09 20,000
After $1,095.90 11K in network and 22k out of network

The letter also notified her that, due to her family’s level of income, she may qualify for a subsidy.  But again, there was a catch.  Because her husband’s employer offers employer sponsored health care plans, her family may be rendered ineligible for the subsidy.

Jen and her husband had selected a plan on the individual market in the first place because, though her husband’s employer offered a good insurance plan, it was more than they needed and more than they wanted to spend, at $200 per week.

Jen was unable to reach BCBS because their phones were jammed.  Now, she and her family will be without any health care coverage, because they have chosen not to pay the higher premium.

Moreover, due to legitimate security concerns Jen has with HealthCare.gov, she does not even want to attempt to sign up for a plan under Obamacare on the exchange.

She said:

I feel helpless, angry, and I hear from so many angles that the website is not secure.  Why would I want to put my information out there?

I have never been affected personally by a government decision so profoundly.  I am being forced to pay a higher premium when I don’t need it now and can’t afford it.

Since I moved to Wilmington, it’s been hard for me to find a full-time job.  I’ve never wanted to hold a sign up in front of the White House till now!

Obamacare is unfair to Jen and her family.  It needs to be fully repealed.

  1. For myself (no family) my medical insurance was acceptable. It was privately obtained and $450 a month for myself. This is an HMO.
Thanks to Obamacare, it goes up $150 a month (more then three of my sprint cell phones). My HMO/INsurer cancelled tens of thousands of subscribers.

The emergency room visit goes from $100 to $300, prescriptions double in price, Hospital (which was endless) is now limited to 6 days per illness/accident.
Wait that is WHY I have insurance, in case I have to spend weeks or months in the hospital. Or in case I need extreme care.
Obamacare has been a bigger disaster then I feared and it has only begun

  2. So the woman has never been on the Obamacare website so has no idea what is available to her there … including subsidies?

Rather than spend the time to investigate she would rather watch FOX news and complain.

… what else would you expect from this nutcase.

    • Because none of all the other stories are true either. No. Can’t be. The fact that the plan she can get now that was like her old plan is 5 times as much? No thats just whining….I am sure she has gobs of money just lying around that she can throw away because every fat sick slob in the US needs coverage.

  3. The only way to change this all is to get conservatives into the Republican Party and then elect better people in the primary elections. By “into” the Republican Party, I mean getting into its voting member ranks, its precinct committeeman ranks where we each live.

About 400,000 Republican Party precinct committeeman slots exist natiowide. Here we are five years after having elected a Marxist to the presidency. 200,000 of those PC slots still remain vacant.

We had lower conservative voter turnout in the 2012 election than we did in 2008. And the same 3 million or so of conservatives who sat out the 2008 election did the same in 2012.

The reason the Republican Party is not “conservative enough” and the reason we conservatives do not elect enough conservatives in the primary election is because not enough of us are actually in the Party filling up the 200,000 vacant Republican Party PC slots where we live.

Much easier to complain on the internet and spin out “well, we ought to do this” or “we ought to do that” ideas that have not a snow ball’s chance in hell of ever coming to fruition.

Bottom line: we conservatives have a perfectly good political party apparatus in the Republican Party. Not enough conservatives are in it. Here in AZ, we’ve got 12,082 Republican Party precinct committeeman slots, and only about 5,720 of them are filled.

My precinct has 12 PC slots. All 12 are filled with conservatives. In the 2012 general election, we worked together to target the Republicans who vote 50% or less of the time and the new voters. It only took each of us 3 to 4 hours to call those folks (about 35 to 45 per PC) and then drop a sample ballot and candidate literature on their doorsteps. We did it in the primary, too. In the 2012 general election, we got 86+% of Republicans to the polls. If conservatives had done that in EVERY precinct in America, Romney would now be in the White House. And we’d have greater numbers of conservatives in the House and Senate and in our state legilatures.

Get involved. Get out of your “internet chair” and occupy a seat at your next monthly Republican Party committee meeting. It’s not hard. It’s not rocket science.

Or continue to lose your liberties.

And prepare for what you’re going to say to your kids and grandkids when they ask, “Why didn’t you do something that mattered? Like organizing and uniting for real political action inside the Republicans Party in your own precinct with other conservatives — by becoming voting members of the Party — precinct committeemen. Why didn’t you do that for yourself and us?”

  4. Obamacare Insurance Rates
“Here’s the first look at insurance rates on 36 exchanges run by the
federal government. States with few competing insurers tend to have higher
rates. Premiums listed below are monthly rates for the benchmark plan and don’t
    include federal subsidies.” http://money.cnn.com/infographic/economy/healthcare-premiums/?iid=article_sidebar

  5. Have to wonder if she is Democrat or Republican. The rest don’t matter anymore. Obama is setting himself as a Potentate and we are all doomed. Only armed conflict will restore that which was.

  8. The idea that you can keep your Barry Unaffordable HC Scam is not a option, we cannot even afford the government that has now become so elite they do not exist under the same laws they write for all others..the government leadership is now a big fat parasitical entity sucking up your income and savings in order to feed their own fat faces and bill themselves as the elite….

  9. and the obamacare hits just keep comin… The latest announcement received from BCBS of NC now puts our premiums higher than our mortgage. Under obamacare our premiums have gone from $285- p/mo to now in excess of $1400- p/mo. The deductible went from $2500 to $7,825-. We earn less than $60K p/ year…. And people continue to defend this piracy called healthcare…the affordable care act….?….. really?

  10. Unquestionably consider that that you stated.
Your favourite reason appeared to be at the net the
simplest factor to bear in mind of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed at the same time as other people think
about concerns that they plainly don’t realize about. You managed
to hit the nail upon the top and also outlined out the whole thing without having side-effects ,
other people could take a signal. Will likely be back to get more.

    Thank you!
