Liberal Assault on Second Amendment Fails

For all the bullying, bribery, and attempts to beat the American people down, the left just sustained a devastating defeat on gun control.  As it turns out, they didn’t have a winning formula.  Conservatives, on the other hand, fought to defend the Constitution, and that resonated with the American people.

The left lost, but they are not blaming themselves.  They say bribery failed them.  One of their own — an unnamed official for a major gun-control group — explained:

Bribery isn’t what it once was. The government has no money. Once upon a time you would throw somebody a post office or a research facility in times like this. Frankly, there’s not a lot of leverage.

Bullying failed them as well:

Mark Glaze, the director of Mike Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns said it was clear by Monday that Manchin-Toomey proposal wouldn’t get to 60 votes after the much-sought endorsement of the Second Amendment Foundation brought them no new support.

“You are not dealing with members who are looking for a reason to vote ‘Yes,’” Glaze said. “You’re not talking about members who are actually looking for solid facts or policy. You’re looking at members who are afraid of the [outside groups].”

Actually, it is the left, misinterpreting statistics and using people as props to instill fear in the American people.

Emotional appeals failed them too. Sen. Richared Blumenthal (D-CT) said:

“The president was tremendously committed and emotionally engaged. I watched the president with these families. He was there for them and really felt it.”

We all felt for the families, any human should.  But emotion does not equal policy.

“I’m very disappointed and there is a sadness here that there was a tremendous bipartisan effort,” Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) said. “Manchin-Toomey didn’t go as far as I would like to go but I supported it because there was a way to go for bipartisanship, so it’s enormously disappointed. I think today there are a lot of hard feelings.”

Of course, bribery, bullying and emotional appeals are the best the left has to offer.  We’ll be seeing more of the same, as several liberal senators made clear yesterday:

“This was just the beginning.” Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV)

“There is more that we can do and will do.” Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL)

“Background checks will happen.  This outcome is a delay, not a defeat.” Sen. Blumenthal

“I never saw a president fight so hard, a vice president, never on any issue… It shows us the cowardice of the Senate.” Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA)

“It takes a long time for these wheels of democracy to grind forward, but they will.” Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY)

We’ve warned that the left wants to take away our constitutional rights and won’t stop until they do.  Fortunately, conservatives will be there fighting to maintain our rights and freedoms.  As CEO Mike Needham said after yesterday’s vote:

[T]he American people dealt a devastating blow to the left’s attempt to undermine the Second Amendment.  The Schumer-Toomey-Manchin Amendment was an ineffective Washington solution crafted behind closed doors that has no place in our political system.  Heritage Action will continue to oppose any bill that infringes on the constitutional rights of the American people.

Big fiscal fights are coming up too.  And we’ll be fighting back the tide of liberalism on that front as well.

  1. Actually, I’d like to quote Schumer in saying “It takes a long time for these wheels of democracy to grind forward, but they will.” However, not in agreement with the left’s effort to grind our Constitution into non-existence.

Rather, I’d like to encourage every freedom loving American who believes in our Constitution and our freedom to learn anything and EVERYTHING you can about the following cause as it’s our one sure shot at ending this entire nightmare and working to ensure it never happens again! IF, when all of the facts of this long-sought research is every heard by a judge with an actual backbone to stand up and stand strong no matter the treats against him or his family but rather for love of country AND for his family and future generations, then every American should make a point of being at that court and ultimately the Supreme Court when it reaches there and making camp until a TRUTHFUL conclusion and results have been reached and appropriate action taken. Please, support this cause and stand strong, loud, and long with it! Oh, and don’t forget to share, share, share every day!

  2. I would love to see Heritage or ANY conservative group take Congress to the Supreme Court to force Congress to “prescribe a manner” in which Concealed Carry Permits are recognized by all states, e.g. as recognizing a driver’s license by checking its expiration date. The 14th Amendment outlaws the discrimination, State to State, of different classes of people. Therefore, by my reasoning, the ‘class of people’, Law Enforcement Personnel, are allowed concealed carry without license, therefore reciprocity is already Constitutional Law, and the Federal Lawmakers voting on nationwide reciprocity of concealed permits is actually wasted Congressional time.

The first EIGHT Amendments of the Bill of Rights were meant by the founders to apply to ALL the several states and the 2nd Amendment, at issue in this series of votes, is clearly worded and makes NO distinction in what Arms the citizenry has a right to bear, or carry. The first American Dictionary from 1828 defines the word “bear” as to “carry, sustain, produce, bring forth” and how the Court can read ANY restrictions into the 2nd Amendment (as well as the 1st, regarding Free Speech OR Establishment of Religion by the Federal Government) makes lawmaking in the form we witnessed in the Senate ridiculous as well as illegal. Without an amendment to the Constitution REPEALING the 2nd Amendment, all laws restricting a citizen of the United States from owning ANY weaponry, even something as ridiculous as an F-16, are illegal. Arms are Arms. Period.

On other issues, I would also love to see someone challenge Roe v Wade (the DNA in a fertilized human egg is Human and nothing else) and the ruling concerning (South, North? – I can’t remember which one) Dakota challenged the holding back of Federal Highway Funds if the States did not conform to the then 55 MPH speed limit, which said, in plain terms, that the Federal Government may overstep its Constitutionally Enumerated Powers by bribing the states into accepting Federal Regulation of States Rights, e.g. the state’s right to regulate driving within its borders. But those are discussions for another day.
