Jay Carney: Economy has Vastly Improved under Obama

You’ve got to be kidding me.

“Well, two things remain uncontestably true. The economy is vastly improved from what it was when Barack Obama was sworn into office as president. We were in economic free-fall. There were predictions that we were headed to the second Great Depression. We were losing up to, over 700,000 jobs a month, we were contracting at greater than 6 percent — our economy was. So, the economy has improved. It has not improved enough.”

Uncontestably true? No one contests this?

Unemployment has increased by 1.4 percentage points since President Obama was inaugurated, from 7.8% to 9.2%. 2.5 million more people are out of work now than when President Obama was campaigning. Oh, and there are millions more who have given up looking for work altogether. Not to mention the fact that 1 in 3 unemployed persons have been out of work for over a year!

So no, Mr. Carney, the economy has not vastly improved.

  1. But what got us to the point where we were at a 7.8% unemployment rate? Bush’s system. When Bush was inaugurated, unemployment stood at 4.2%. Want to make that 9.2% a 12.8%? Get rid of Obama. When a new president is inaugurated, they don’t begin with a clean slate–Obama has had to deal with the after-effects of Bush for several years. Nobody got mad at Bush’s habits of spending more than he was collecting in taxes, and now Obama is paying the consequences, trying to reverse the effects from Bush’s mistakes. You’re really ignorant if you didn’t realize that change takes time, and that it’s unrealistic to believe that Obama could drastically reduce unemployment within one term. Economic “improvement” includes the stagnation of a failing system.
