Government Shutdown? White House Won’t Commit to Veto

As President Obama prepares to take a series of unlawful execution actions on immigration – including amnesty and work permits for roughly five million illegal immigrants – the phrase “government shutdown” has resurfaced.  Is a government shutdown the inevitable outcome of confronting Obama’s lawlessness?  Apparently not.  White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest refused to say the President would veto a government spending bill that included a provision that would defund his executive amnesty.

Reporter: SO YOU DON’T RULE OUT THE PRESIDENT SIGNING INTO LAW SOMETHING THAT WOULD UNDO THE VERY THING HE’S GOING TO ANNOUNCE TOMORROW NIGHT?

Earnest: I THINK THAT SEEMS — I THINK WE’LL HAVE TO SORT OF EVALUATE FOR OURSELVES WHAT PROPOSALS REPUBLICANS PUT FORWARD. I WOULDN’T WANT TO HAZARD A GUESS AT THIS POINT.

The full exchange and video are below:

>> Reporter: WILL THE PRESIDENT VETO A GOVERNMENT FUNDING BILL THAT INCLUDED A PROVISION TO PREVENT HIM FROM TAKING THIS ACTION?

>> Earnest: WELL, IT CERTAINLY WOULD NOT BE A PROPOSAL THAT THE PRESIDENT WOULD SUPPORT OBVIOUSLY. I THINK WE WOULD EVALUATE THESE INDIVIDUAL PROPOSALS ON THE MERITS BEFORE WE MAKE A FINAL DECISION. WE’LL SEE. I THINK WE’LL ALSO DEPEND ON WHAT REPUBLICANS CHOOSE TO DO IN THAT SITUATION AS WELL.

>> Reporter: SO I WANT TO BE SURE I GOT THIS STRAIGHT. THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF TALK BY REPUBLICANS SAYING THAT THEY WOULD FUND THE GOVERNMENT BUT NOT ALLOW THIS TO GO FORWARD. USE THAT AS LEVERAGE. SO YOU DON’T RULE OUT THE PRESIDENT SIGNING INTO LAW SOMETHING THAT WOULD UNDO THE VERY THING HE’S GOING TO ANNOUNCE TOMORROW NIGHT?

>> Earnest: I THINK THAT SEEMS — I THINK WE’LL HAVE TO SORT OF EVALUATE FOR OURSELVES WHAT PROPOSALS REPUBLICANS PUT FORWARD. I WOULDN’T WANT TO HAZARD A GUESS AT THIS POINT.  IT WON’T SURPRISE YOU TO HEAR THAT PROPOSALS THAT ARE FLOATED LIKE THAT CERTAINLY WOULD NOT BE AMONG THE PROPOSALS WE WOULD SUPPORT.

  1. Send him an omnibus spending bill that moves the CR to Feb 15 but making any executive order from 2012-2016 with respect to immigration null and void.

    • Hey Chief, I’m thinking CR’s of no more than 30 days at a time!!!!!! It may look ridiculous, but it will let him and the democrats know they mean business!!!

  2. Can the House pass a budget the excludes USCIS? And another bill that funds USCIS but forbids it from using funds to pay for the EO?

  3. HMMMMM…..this is giving evidence to the thoughts I’ve been having all week about this amnesty thing …..the president is bluffing and so are the networks, his groups and the democrats……going to encourage Republicans to hold strong and only pass a short term CR to keep him under control……Mary L’s election is still in the works, although it looks like she is going down!!!!! After Dec 6, we are going to have be on our guard for another Christmas surprise…..he’s definitely been good for that in the past.

  4. Heritage is doing our country and especially the Republican party a great disservice by the anti-reform positions it takes. It wants another shutdown, like the one ot forced upon our nation last time. That shutdown was a political disaster. Our nation needs immigration reform, but Republican politicians are afraid to act for fear of being labeled “RINO’s.” This has created the situation we now have, where President Obama HAS TO act unilaterally or nothing will ever be done. His place in history is going to go way up for what the Republicans, pressured by Heritage, are forcing him to do.

    • You’re in deep here. “Anti-reform”? What needs to be “reformed”? We have laws, and the last 5 presidents chose to ignore those laws. WE DON’T NEED IMMIGRATION REFORM! We need to enforce the laws on the books with GOOD FAITH. If this stance results in a shutdown of the government, so be it. If standing by the principals of law and order results in a “political disaster” as you put it, it is what the majority of U.S. citizens want. They want, and expect, their laws be abided by, YES, even by their elected leaders. Cool-aid drinking results in statements like “HAS TO act unilaterally” instead of making a good faith effort to compromise (that word means coming TOGETHER to come up with a solution) to do what’s right for the U.S. In Obamatopia compromise means doing what his academic and political handlers have decided we need to help them and theirs execute their political agenda. The sad thing is the complacent and obidient media will be going along with the provided propaganda that will be spewed this evening. patriottt, going along to get along serves nobody but those looking to enlarge their herd and keeping you in line with the rest. You completely miss the point of our political system. Debate and compromise is built in.

  5. Double talk, extortion, and lawlessness! If the president breaks the law he should be jailed, if congress forces a shut down just exactly does this benefit America!? Seems we get screwed and still have to pay for either choice! No amnesty, illegals go home, congress impeach Obama, Obama rot in hell. Why is this so difficult to understand and accomplish!?

  6. And why didn’t the GOP take this action when President Obama issue DACA in 2012. Oh yeah, SCOTUS took that case and ruled that President Obama was within his Constitutional Power….funny how the GOP don’t remember facts they don’t like.

    • They did not have control of Senate and was worried the people would hold them accountable. Now, the people have spoken on this and other Obama policies and have loudly said shut him down.

      • NOPE! They are afraid – but they can rally ignorant folks to whine like 2 year old children. The GOP shut down the gov’t just last year….did you forget that? They were not in charge then either…things haven’t changed – but if it makes you happy – I promise to never vote for President Obama again.
