Driving the Day: Senate Budget Votes
This afternoon, the Senate will vote on two measures to fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year (through September 30th). The first, HR1, passed the House 18 days ago and would cut $61 billion in spending. The second, the Democratic alternative would cut just $4.7 billion.
These votes will demonstrate how serious Senators are about cutting spending for what’s left of this fiscal year.

The Democratic proposal mirrors President Obama’s recommendations. If Senate Democrats reject the proposal, the battle lines will be drawn. Some, like West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, have sounded warning about the proposal because it does not cut enough spending. Others oppose the proposal because they do not support any spending cuts. That is a startling thought.
