Right now through April 18, early voting is underway, and on Election Day, April 21, voters will decide whether to amend the state constitution to let politicians in Richmond redraw the state’s congressional district maps. While the ballot language claims this change would “restore fairness,” the reality is very different.
Virginia’s current congressional map was created by a bipartisan redistricting commission established by voters in 2020 to ensure fairness and transparency. That map incudes 6 Democrat-leaning districts and 5 Republican-leaning districts.
The amendment on the ballot would allow Richmond politicians to throw out that bipartisan map and replace it with one they drew themselves—favoring Democrats in 10 districts, leaving Republicans with just 1. Even worse, once this new map is in place, it could not be changed again until 2030.
That’s not “fair.” It’s political gerrymandering.
Polling shows Virginians overwhelmingly reject this kind of manipulation. 76% say gerrymandering should not be allowed at all, and an overwhelming 87% say electoral maps should reflect the will of voters—not politicians.
But confusing ballot language is masking the truth. When voters see only the wording about “restoring fairness,” they are being tricked. After learning the full impact of the measure—like the potential 10–1 partisan split and no changes allowed until 2030—support drops significantly. Half of voters say the ballot language is confusing, and a majority (54%) believe the amendment could silence voters.
This amendment doesn’t restore fairness—it allows politicians to override a bipartisan process, rig the map in their favor, and lock in power until 2030.
Virginia voters should reject this proposal by voting NO. Early voting is happening NOW through April 18, and the last day to vote is Election Day, April 21.
