Washington - Today, the Supreme Court The Supreme Court announced two decisions on laws regarding marriage. Heritage Action released the following statement from chief executive officer Michael A. Needham:
"The Supreme Court issued decisions today that disenfranchised citizens and their elected representatives, but it did not redefine marriage throughout the nation. Citizens of California voted twice to defend marriage, but because their state elected officials refused to defend Proposition 8, the Supreme Court today said the citizens group behind Prop 8 did not have standing to defend the law. In striking down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, the Court declared that Congress has to accept whatever the states say about marriage, allowing states to impose their definition on the federal government. Marriage between a man and a woman matters for children, civil society and limited government and we encourage all citizens and their elected officials to stand up for it."
