Memo for the Movement: House Should Reject Food Stamp and Corporate Cronyism Legislation

Press Releases · Jun 19, 2013

Conservative Action Project

The Conservative Action Project, chaired by former Attorney General Edwin Meese and former Congressman David McIntosh, is designed to facilitate conservative leaders working together on behalf of common goals. Participants include the CEO's of over 100 organizations representing all major elements of the conservative movement-economic, social and national security.

House Should Reject Food Stamp and Corporate Cronyism Legislation

America's agriculture economy is vitally important to our nation, not just for rural families and businesses who grow and produce our food, but also for Americans in all walks of life whose jobs are either directly or indirectly related to the fate of American agriculture. That is why it is so important for Congress to pass good policy. Unfortunately, the House of Representatives is missing a key opportunity to provide the kinds of reform that we need. The Bill before the House is merely increasing food stamps spending and corporate cronyism for agricultural special interests.

This $970 billion bill (80% of which goes to increased food stamps spending) is laden with special interest handouts, cronyism, anti-free market policies, and the furtherance of a welfare policy that promotes dependency and decline over giving folks the opportunity to pursue the American Dream.

Further, the amendment process is badly broken. Key conservative amendments have been blocked for consideration so that the coalition of urban liberals and big-spending Republicans remains intact.

The underlying policy is seriously flawed and badly misses the mark, and the amendment process is unfair for conservatives. We urge you to oppose this legislation. America's farm policy is too important to get wrong.
