Washington -- Today, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) introduced the Higher Education Reform and Opportunity (HERO) Act, which would empower states to develop their own accreditation systems to accredit colleges, individual courses within colleges, apprenticeship programs, and curricula. Heritage Action released the following statement from chief executive officer Michael A. Needham:
"Our nation's 19th century model of higher education isn't keeping up with the demand for 21st century skills. The federal government is stifling innovation with its one-sized fits all approach to college accreditation, which is why Mike Lee and Ron DeSantis introduced the HERO Act. Instead of simply tweaking the Higher Education Act, Congress could ignite a higher-education revolution by creating opportunity and choice in with this transformational reform."
