Indiana Takes Next Step to Protect Life

Press Releases · Aug 6, 2022

WASHINGTON – Today, Heritage Action, a conservative grassroots organization with two million grassroots activists, including thousands of Hoosiers, released a statement from Executive Director Jessica Anderson applauding the Indiana General Assembly for passing SB 1, and thanking Governor Holcomb for signing the bill into law.

While the Left continues its relentless attacks on pro-life Americans and pregnancy resource centers, Indiana is standing up to protect life. Not only do SB 1 and SB 2 protect unborn babies by defending them from horrific abortion procedures and holding abortion providers accountable, but they also include important protections for mothers.

Thanks to the Indiana General Assembly and Governor Holcomb, Hoosiers can now trust that life will be protected in Indiana. Heritage Action looks forward to working with state lawmakers in Indiana to take even more steps to protect life.

BACKGROUND:

  • SB 1 prohibits abortion with exceptions for rape or incest within 10 weeks gestation. It also allows exceptions for preventing substantial physical impairment or death of the mother or if the unborn child suffers from a lethal fetal anomaly within 20 weeks gestation.

  • The legislation also effectively eliminates dangerous abortion clinics by requiring abortions to be performed at hospitals or ambulatory surgical centers owned by hospitals. This provision will protect both unborn babies and their mothers.

  • SB 2 takes additional steps to empower mothers. It establishes the Hoosier Families First Fund to help support families through new and existing programs. The bill also supports families through other measures, such as eliminating diapers from the sales tax and providing $3,000 tax exemptions for adopted children.
