Washington, D.C.—The Heritage Foundation and Heritage Action applauded Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg and House Republicans for introducing the “Less Bureaucracy, Better Education” legislative package.
Heritage Foundation and Heritage Action President Dr. Kevin Roberts praised the package, stating:
Washington has prioritized ballooning bureaucracy over effective education policy for too long. The result was a parasitic Department of Education growing larger and more expensive while student outcomes stagnated. House Republicans are now taking an important step toward excising these bureaucratic leeches by putting students, parents, and taxpayers first.
The package consists of ten bills which would transfer statutory authorities from the Department of Education to agencies better equipped to administer them; all while maintaining continuity for students.

The ‘Less Bureaucracy, Better Education’ package represents a major step toward advancing the Trump administration’s agenda to downsize the federal government and refocus education policy on student achievement. Heritage Action applauds Chairman Walberg and his colleagues for advancing legislation that restores accountability, improves efficiency, and ensures federal resources are focused on helping students succeed.
The measures included in the package address myriad educational policies including workforce development, international education oversight, and support for student parents.
Jonathan Butcher, Education Policy Research Fellow at The Heritage Foundation, added:
This is a strategic move by Congress to right-size the department. Lawmakers can now move on to proposals to sunset the entire agency after codifying this set of interagency agreements. Programs such as spending for children with special needs and with disabilities, along with civil rights protections, remain intact. These proposals advance a conservative goal that has been in place since the Reagan administration.
