WASHINGTON - Heritage Action, a conservative grassroots organization with over 2.5 million grassroots activists nationwide, including thousands of Alabamians, urges Alabama Governor Kay Ivey to swiftly sign SB289, the Success Sequence Bill, legislation that would require Alabama public schools teach students a three-step sequence proven to help youth succeed into law.
Heritage Action Alabama State Director Karen Jaroch released the following statement in support of SB289:
“Senate Bill 289, The Success Sequence Bill, is a direct vehicle to help Alabama students succeed. This historic legislation is backed by research that shows students who follow this sequence have demonstrably better health outcomes, family relationships, and economic success.
We applaud the Alabama Legislature for passing SB 289 and strongly urge Governor Ivey to sign this bill into law to better equip Alabama’s youth to grow up to succeed. The Success Sequence Bill will properly prepare Alabama’s youth for a brighter future tomorrow.”
Jonathan Butcher, the Will Skillman senior research fellow in the Center for Education Policy at The Heritage Foundation, said:
“The success sequence is a commonsense set of ideas that is supported by significant social science research. Those who finish high school, get a job or enroll in college, and get married before having children experience better outcomes than those who do not. And notably, children born and raised in married families have more positive outcomes—less likely to live in poverty, more likely to do well in school, and more—than their peers.
There is every reason to teach students, at age-appropriate levels, these basic research findings. The new proposal calls on the state board of education to develop the program and local boards of education to teach the three basic ideas from the success sequence. This is a great step for students and families."
Heritage has showcased the research supporting the sequence in publications and events.
