Washington, D.C.—Heritage Action today announced its opposition to Virginia’s redistricting referendum currently before voters, warning that the proposed constitutional amendment would enable a partisan gerrymander designed to rob Virginians of fair representation in Congress.
Early voting is already underway ahead of the April 21 referendum.
The amendment’s ballot language claims it would “restore fairness” by allowing the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts. In reality, the proposal empowers Democrats in Richmond to replace Virginia’s current 6D:5R congressional map with a dramatically skewed map containing 10 Democrat-favored districts and just one Republican-district—effectively silencing millions of Virginians at the ballot box.
“Virginia voters deserve real, fairly apportioned representation—not a gerrymandered map designed to silence a minority party,” said Kevin Roberts, President of Heritage Action. “This amendment is a blatant partisan power grab by politicians in Richmond to rewrite the rules and lock in one-party control of Virginia’s congressional delegation.”
Early voting is currently underway and will continue through Election Day on April 21. Heritage Action is urging Virginians to make a plan to vote early, vote NO to reject this power grab, and spread the word about what’s at stake. Voters can find their polling location and early voting information through the Virginia Department of Elections at https://vote.elections.virginia.gov/VoterInformation/Lookup/polling.
"The misleading redistricting amendment proposed by Virginia Democrats seeks to end fair representation in Virginia's congressional delegation. Every Virginian should feel insulted by this scheme to steal seats under the guise of fair maps," said Daniel West, House Government Affairs Director for Heritage Action and a Virginia resident.
Heritage Action is calling on Virginians across the Commonwealth to vote NO on the amendment to stop this partisan power grab and protect fair representation for every voter.
