In his second term, President Trump has focused on de-escalating the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which was the product of a weak Biden administration, and has not called on Congress to pass any legislative package related to the conflict. The Trump administration has pushed for peace in the region, and this bill risks undermining the Administration’s efforts by shifting the grounds of negotiation without coordination with the administration.
America First foreign policy must be focused on securing America’s national interests and strengthening defense capabilities with a particular eye on our hemisphere. Heritage Action has held firm that foreign military aid must be clearly tied to America’s national interest with a clear strategy and path to victory. Despite Republican calls for clarity in strategy under the Biden administration, the Ukraine-Russia conflict remained a fraud-ridden quagmire without accountability, strategy, or path to victory.
The policy contained in the Democrat-led H.R. 2913 is an attempt to force President Trump’s hand at a time when he is working hard to bring resolution to conflicts across the globe.
This bill is being brought to a vote because three members of the Republican conference joined Democrats to subvert the Trump administration’s foreign policy led by the Commander-in-Chief. It is malpractice to advance Democrat priorities meant to divide the Republican conference and remove the focus from advancing wins for the American people.
