KEY VOTE: “NO” ON THE BUILD BACK BETTER ACT, H.R. 5376

KEY VOTE: House · Nov 5, 2021

Heritage Action opposes the Build Back Better Act (H.R. 5376) and will include it as a key vote on our legislative scorecard.

The House will soon vote on the Build Back Better Act (H.R. 5376)— known colloquially as the reconciliation package or the Democrats reckless tax and spending spree. Democrats hope to rush through this liberal wish list before the American public can read it, even though it has yet to receive a CBO score and many provisions are unlikely to survive the Senate’s Byrd Rule.

While it would take hundreds of pages to list all of the Leftist provisions included in this monstrosity of a bill, the worst of the worst includes:

  • large scale amnesty for millions,
  • misguided prescription drug provisions,
  • handouts for the wealthy in high-tax states,
  • increases to vaccine mandate penalties,
  • Obamacare expansions,
  • a job-killing 15% minimum corporate tax rate,
  • and federal funding of abortions by not including Hyde protections

Our national debt, which is approaching $30 trillion, is already on an unsustainable path, and yet this bill would add trillions of dollars to that amount. Democrats know this, which is why they continuously repeat the ludicrous lie that the bill “costs nothing,” while using budgetary gimmicks to hide the real cost of this legislation from the American people.

Many of the included programs receive partial funding—creating temporary benefits that are clearly intended to be made permanent. This means that the cost estimates for the bill will only reveal a portion of the true price tag. Additionally, these gimmicks will set up future congresses with intentionally tough votes on whether to extend the new entitlement benefits—clearly intended to circumvent the reconciliation process’ fiscal controls. Ultimately, these gimmicks will only serve to worsen the biggest wave of inflation in decades.

Crisis has defined this administration. Since January, we’ve faced a crisis at the southern border, as illegal aliens have streamed across the border at historic levels. At the same time, we’re facing supply chain and labor shortage crises, both of which are fueling an inflation crisis that threatens the well-being of American families. This isn’t a coincidence—these crises are a direct result of the extreme left-wing policies that this administration has pursued.

But rather than seeing the results of their actions and charting a new course, Democrats want to use this bill to double down on their radical agenda by pursuing policies that will further exacerbate these crises. Amnesty will incentivize more illegal border crossings, and increased social spending will keep people out of the workforce, further crush supply chains, and drive prices even higher. The only winners will be left-wing activists who receive massive payouts and subsidies for their preferred special interests. And working families will foot the bill.

In order to prevent our nation from going further down the path of fiscal catastrophe, members should reject H.R. 5376 and avoid doubling down on the Left’s wayward policies. Rather than continue to pursue this massive proposal that will fundamentally reshape the American way of life, Congress should pursue fiscally responsible legislation to rectify, not exacerbate, the numerous issues brought on by President Biden’s agenda.
