The 4 W’s of Defunding Obamacare

Obamacare is a predictable failure because it is based on the idea that government manipulation and control of the health care system can improve outcomes for patients, reduce costs and increase choice.   It can’t, and it was only a matter of time before even Democratic support for the law began to erode.

The question is what Congress can do now given President Obama’s intransigence on the issue.  The answer is the total and complete defunding of Obamacare.  In Iowa, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) made the compelling case to do just that:

WHO has the power to make sure Obamacare is stopped in its tracks?  Our Senators and Representatives have the power to do so by defunding the law.  The Constitution grants Congress the “power of the purse.”  Through legislation, Congress can make certain the Obama administration is not given another dime to implement this disastrous law.  We must also keep the pressure on Congress and give them our support by making calls, using Twitter and Facebook, writing emails, and visiting offices.

WHAT needs to happen to stop Obamacare?  The most viable approach to stop the implementation of Obamacare is a complete and total defunding of the law by Congress.  Fortunately, Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA) and Sen. Cruz have introduced the Defund Obamacare Act of 2013.  Heritage Action is key voting in favor of co-sponsorship of the legislation in both the House and the Senate.  Heritage’s Chris Jacobs explains that only by defunding Obamacare entirely can Congress prevent the law from more fully taking root.

WHY is it necessary to defund Obamacare rather than taking another approach?  Other approaches, such as delaying particular parts of the law, will simply allow it to become more entrenched.  Obamacare cannot be fixed or tweaked.  Congress cannot unilaterally repeal Obamacare, but they do have the authority to defund all Obamacare activities for the upcoming fiscal year.  If Pres. Obama disagrees, he is free to shutdown the government in defense of Obamacare.  That is his choice.

Even the powerful unions that so strongly supported Obamacare since its inception are beginning to understand how harmful Obamacare is.  The President promised that if you like your insurance plan, you’ll get to keep it; but that was a false promise. Obamacare has already caused insurance premiums to rise and Americans across the country to lose their jobs.  Seven million people will lose their health insurance thanks to Obamacare, and this process has barely begun.  More pain will follow as employers simply cannot afford to continue providing health insurance for their part-time employees under Obamacare.

Doctors are already retiring prematurely because of Obamacare’s onerous paperwork.  Indeed, the American Association of Medical Colleges estimates the U.S. faces a shortage of 91,500 physicians by 2020.  The doctor-patient relationship is also being harmed because of Obamacare’s excessive red tape and regulations.

Young people, and especially young men, will be heavily burdened by the higher costs resulting from Obamacare.

Obamacare is also an assault on religious freedom.  Today, more than 200 plaintiffs are involved in more than 60 lawsuits over the Obamacare mandate.

Make no mistake, the future is grim under Obamacare.  Obamacare’s new entitlements are scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2014.  If this occurs, taxpayers will spend $48 billion in 2014 alone and nearly $1.8 trillion through 2023.  Moreover, on January 1, 2014, the government will be able to force Americans to purchase a product – health insurance – for the first time ever.

WHEN can Congress implement the plan to stop Obamacare?  Now! Time is of the essence if Congress wants to stop Obamacare’s burdensome regulations, so the momentum must build immediately. The politics of this debate will change after Obamacare becomes fully implemented.  As we have noted previously, open enrollment begins October 1, 2013.  Once people enroll, they will begin receiving massive subsidies on January 1, 2014.

As Sen. Cruz explained, Congress has an excellent opportunity this September to defund Obamacare using the must-pass Continuing Resolution (CR).  He and other Senators, and a growing number of Representatives, have pledged not to vote for a CR that funds any part of Obamacare.

This is a battle conservatives must fight now and win.

      • good thing I smoke regular cigarettes. I hate menthol. The government is getting way too far up our dupas. Time to IMPEACH BO and get rid of everyone in the WH, congress & the senate. They tend to forget they work for us. We do not work for them. I am so sick of BO and his socialistic ways.

  1. Sure, we can stop it until our dear Republican congress has to help us and half or more goes over to the Democrats. The pay offs must be good because they sure don’t stand with us.

  2. The “power of the purse” was given to the House of Representatives – Article 1, Section 7.

Which is why Obama-care is illegal legislation and should have been found unconstitutional.

It makes me wonder, with the NSA spying, if the Supreme Court was not “influenced” by the executive branch?

  3. …and for what it’s worth, Congress can overturn a presidential veto and the House of Representatives can make things EXTREMELY difficult on the executive branch and the Senate by mimicking the actions of Majority Leader Reid and refusing to bring anything passed by the Senate to the House floor for a vote.

Senator Reid has been doing this for three straight years and the Speaker of the House has let him get away with it because “it would make his job harder”?

How much harder does it get than being forced into unfruitful backroom meetings with the president and Senate Majority Leader only to have them appear in press afterward to play a game of “he said, she said”.

Speaker Boehner has bent over backwards for this administration and gotten no where. It’s time, Mr. Speaker, to pull the kiddie gloves off and give these thugs a black eye to remember you by.

  4. Remember Rudyard Kipling’s Glymph? The thing just sat on the docks of some equatorial country and nothing could move. When it comes to Appropriations and funding, the House has this kind of power. Remember, the so called Affordable Healthcare Act actually came from the Senate (possibly in violation of the Constitution, but nevermind); but it took a House vote (so you can see what’s in it) to get it passed. If it involves funding, the House can and should Just Say NO!!!

  5. If congress does not defund then we know for a fact that there is no difference between the parties. My bet is they will not? Sorry to say the progressives are winning and I think that only an act of God will stop them now. I pray I am wrong

but think the last days are here.

  6. Stop talking for Gods Sakes and do it! So much nicey nicey talk 24/7! So sick of it! The American people want action! Washington has to stop cow towing to all the special interests! They need to cut programs that are wasteful period! And there are a gazillion! And continue the Bengazi , IRS, NSA, Fast and Furious and now this Zimmerman scandals ! The DOJ had no legal right to force the state of Florida to take this case to trial for their racist agenda! It is truly a smackdown to the American people after all the progress we have made in this country! We must hold Obama and his team accountable for ALL of the above. Lets go republicans and democrats ! This is your damn country too! Don’t any of you give one rats ass how we are being deflated in every way by this dictator of a president? Time to get off your asses !

  7. Almost half of America/Mexico WANTS ObaMAOcare. Democrats have control of the senate & pretty much the house too thanks to the gutlessness of Boehner, Cantor, Ryan & the rest of the establishment Republicans/RINOs. WHO, other than the 1/3 of REAL conservatives in the Republican party, is going to stand up & put a stop to this train wreck?
Once all the leeches get signed on it will be almost impossible to stop, it must be done NOW. Call, fax & email your representatives, not that it does much good, look at the latest amnesty passed in the senate against the will of the people. We have to try though because if this stands our healthcare system is doomed, our economy is doomed & our country will become as irrelevant as the Brits are now.

    • Some attorneys are saying impeaching doesn’t do the job. Everything he has written, every appointment, nominations made and passed, and all of his executive orders will remain. Prove he is not and was not qualified to run for President of the United States because he has NOT ever provided his long form original birth certifcate, only fakes and forgeries. Forgery in the U.S. is a felony. But the Congress looks the other way. Why?

      • I’ve been asking the same question of the Legislative and Judicial branches for 5 years. The Executive Branch “Crime Syndicate” ruling our country has many contacts and many “fear” enforcers….

  8. We need to contact our representatives and senators, Dems and Repubs – you wish for re-election?- repeal or defund this “trainwreck”.

It looks worse and worse, and it’s still in the “promise stage”. As with all fed. gov’t entitlement programs, if allowed to actually become a part of the fabric of our economy; it will be much more devastating to the citizens and economy, than even promised.

  9. Obamacare is TYRANNY and GRAND THEFT on steroids. It is a DESTROY AMERICA CONSPIRACY written and voted for by the representatives of the globalist Satanic Illuminati in congress and in the president.

  10. We need to defund it and repeal it. Then, we need to get rid of everyone in Congress, the Senate and the Whitehouse that voted for it. Then, we need to impeach every Supreme Court Justice that agreed to it. We need to get this country back to some common sense leadership.

  11. Congress wouldn’t lift a finger to stop that abortion of a plan, they went nuts to get it shoved down our throats, so they and the senate wouldn’t do anything against this pig because they haven’t got the guts to stand up to him.

  12. Contact your representatives and senators. We must hold them accountable. The majority never favored this huge monstrosity of a Law; and with the majority wanting it repealed or at least defunded – tell your congresspeople – either they get rid of this Law as soon as possible; or people will respond to their playing politics and blinding following Obama, forcing a law on citizens that they never even read; and will be a trainwreck.

They have a chance to save their job and engender the trust of their constituents, or play politics and be replaced with new Repubs; who will do the job needed.

  16. This is a good time to establish the redline between big government and smaller, responsible gov’t types. It’s time to finally build a budget, defund Obamacare and start to put our country back on a good economic track. Let the members of congress tell us by their vote which side of the line they are on so we can properly reward them starting next Nov. We always hear about the danger of a gov’t shutdown (danger for republicans) but republicans gained in the election following the budget battle between repubs and Clinton. Ques, of course, is whether forcing a shutdown will be good strategy.

  23. Can you spell beating a dead horse? Obamacare has been passed as a law by Congress, signed by the President and approved by the SCOTUS.

Just because Republicans are angered by it does not make it a valid program. It is silly to vote 37 times in the House to repeal it when everyone knows it will go nowhere. It is also silly to think that angered Republicans are going to be able to defund the ACA. They aren’t.

My family has already gone through having a close family member denied health insurance last fall with lifesaving medication costing over $500 a month. We are not the only family in America who has had to deal with this either.

What is true is that Obamacare WILL be implemented despite the angry rants from the right and it will give all Americans a chance to have health insurance. States that WANT the ACA to work will be successful, as is happening in Oregon and California.

The greatest irony is that Obamacare mirrors Romneycare when he was governor

    • There were many differences between Obamacare and Romney care. They were spelled out during the campaign had you bothered to research rather than just listen to lame stream media. You lost a family member and I am sorry, however I am more sorry that you think because it happened to you, that everyone else should have to shut up and deal too. See my attitude would be this happened to me, I would not want to see it happen to others. That is the difference between Christians and Godless democrats.

Also if it is such a freaking great plan, why are none in congress going to be required to have it???? It will NOT be free, it will not be health care, and it will not give people the “chance” to have insurance, it makes it into a tax and MANDATES that they do! If they can’t pay rent, or utilities? Oh well!!!
      WAKE UP!!!!!

      • Really? There are “so many differences between Obamacare and Romneycare? Then it should be easy for you to list a few, right? Both parties in Congress refuse to change there benefits, so you and I agree on that one. But guess which group is most against Obamacare? Those on Medicare, a single payer system. Wow. Nice consistency. Lastly, I find it offensive that you would say “Godless Democrats.” If you actually read the teachings of Jesus, you know that he was all about not judging, understanding, acceptance and love. You sound just like another frustrated Cafeteria Christian, picking and choosing which parts of the Bible and the teachings of Jesus you choose to follow.

    • I am sorry for your loss. But we all face challenges and obstacles in life. Forcing health rationing on Americans is not justifiable.

      • Thanks, But “forcing health rational on Americans” is not what is happening. 30 million people have NO health insurance, yet all of us pay for their care, sooner or later. By all accounts, our health care system has been manipulated by insurance companies charging 33% admininstration costs over and above their profits. Wow. Then we have hospitals overcharging, including $50 for gauze and bandages. We had an elderly family member at 90 in the hospital. . the ran five tests, the same five tests that were done the year before, at a three day cost of $38 K. Now the ACA will be much more managed in costs and rein in those overcharges that ultimately we all pay. But don’t believe me. We’ll know by the next election how well the ACA works. And it will.

        • Apparently even after Obamacare, there will be millions of Americans without healthcare still. So the problem is not solved and does not serve as a rationale. Further an independent payment board will price healthcare options that are deemed unnecessary and hospitals and doctors will be unable to provide that care for anyone. This healthcare is a fiasco and was written by insurance companies that stand to make millions in premiums. Unfortunately, the young people under 3 and old people over 70 will not be covered. There is nothing about this law that is right. It is financially a fiasco according to the CBO and morally unethical. It is not healthcare. It is a tax.

          • You sound like an expert that hates the law before we even know it’s implementation. But we WILL know how it works by the next election and it WILL work for those states that WANT it to work. Insurance companies can no longer deny coverage, which is big for our family since we’ve already had fam. members denied coverage. Ins. companies can no longer charge 33% for admin. costs. Now it must be 20% or lower. Kaiser is 8%, Medicare is 6%. Oregon and California exchanges are already publishing the rates for next year. In San Diego Country, for example, that average rates are 12% lower that this year. There is a whole lot about this law that IS right.

          • Because I don’t agree with you I hate it? Premiums are forecasted to rise. You must be very naive to believe that they will not. How can they not? It is riding on the backs of young people who do not need it and will refuse it. If they don’t pay the premiums will skyrocket. I am sorry for you and your family but that is not a good reason to sock it to everybody because it will deliver your family from financial hardship. Medicare will also decrease to the elderly and as I said before if they are over 70 they will not be covered. Additionally, passing this law behind closed doors in the wee hours of the morning with no Republicans present is cohersive and punitive to the rest of us. It’s not okay anyway you want to paint it. I am giving you facts. You are giving me percentages that are pie in the sky for now.

          • Medicare coverage will not stop for those who are 70. If someone goes to the hospital now, whether they have insurance or not, they are served. . and all the rest of us are paying for it, one way or the other. I’m not sure where you are getting your Obamacare information but it is not correct. Take San Diego for example: premiums being offered by the exchanges beginning in January are 12% lower than this year for and include “Silver plan” coverage for a person 40 years old at $263 a month for Kaiser, $288 for Sharp Healthcare, and $320 for Health Net. The 2014 average for the Silver Plan is $290, 12% lower than this year, as I shared. I think what you are worrying about will all come out in the wash. BTW, you are not giving me any facts. But I DID just give you verifiable facts. Managed health care is going to smooth out useless costs and dupications of services to keep health care costs lower. I’ll meet you here next summer and we can see who is most accurate.

          • There are PLENTY of statistics and rising premiums occurring NOW that show it is a false optimism. We will see that’s right. It’s no wonder that the TEAMSTERS are backing out of it, that large corporations are asking for waivers, that the IRS employees are begging for waivers as well. UHUH.

          • Really? Whose statistics do you have? From Fox? Oops. My statistic are verifiable and from Oregon and California. You can play it anyway you want, and I’d be more than happy to look at YOUR verifiable statistics. . on what is being offered. In fact, the states that are participation will be publishing rates for all exchanges and groups, small and large in October. I’ll look for you then and you can show your stats. . .yeah, right.

          • You know, you have a nasty attitude that is so typical of liberal. We are all pressed with daily challenges but I am not on this site bemoaning my problems and asking you to give up your thoughts and give me what I demand. That is so typical of you liberals. Anyone that disagrees with you is spoken to like a child. Well, I don’t appreciate it. I am not asking you to solve my problems don’t ask me to solve yours at my expense.

          • you sound like an idiot. I don’t need to see certain laws implemented to decide it is not good for a majority of the people. if 30 million people are without healthcare , why change it up for the 300 million plus other people? ahh its bc it is not about healthcare….wake up , lay off the dope and educate yourself you pathetic troll.

          • Brudddah, who so agro? Are your knuckles white when you type? I’ll meet you here this time next year and we can discuss what worked on the ACA and what didn’t.

    • This new America you so prize is causing us to lose our health care plan – we budget for an excellent plan that has already been eroded due to government interference. I assume that we will eventually be entered into some government version of health care. My wife has a chronic disease and I’m certain that she will be denied the services she requires for a healthy life due to the expense and the fact that she is over 55. I don’t care how wonderful you think this process is, it sucks for my family and I blame self-centered idiots like you.

      • Uh, go ahead and cite your source that you’ll be losing your current coverage. That is bs. We have also had a close family member denied health coverage last July with life saving medication costing $500 a MONTH. As of January, health insurance companies CANNOT deny coverage. I’m not sure where you get your information about Obamacare but what you are being told is bul lsh it about it. Do you know what the exchanges are? Do you realize that the exchanges are competing right now for consumers like you and me? Do you realize that competition has not happened before? Insurance companies would just jack their rates over and over? Do you know that health insurance premiums have risen only 1.3% in the last year? The lowest in 50 years?

        • First it was the lower limits to our health savings accounts. I don’t know the source – it was just presented to us as dictated by the new law. Then the premiums went up at least 40%. I don’t know the source, it was just the bill we got for coverage. Now we’re told that the health care plans will be curtailed. I don’t know the source other than the company benefits folks. We are not all political operatives like you and Sandra Fluke. Sometimes we react to actual events in our own lives rather than report on “some people I met” or “someone in my family.” You and self-righteous idiots like you have caused this huge problem for my family and I will blame you and the Democratic Party for the rest of my life.

          • cat, you are dripping with anger and hate. Why is that? Is that how you want to live the rest of your life, angry and blaming everyone elses?

          • You really have no idea, do you? There’s a little more to it than that. You just got through calling me a liar because I had no “citation” about my own family’s health insurance and you wonder why I got angry? The Great Father in Washington decided to fix a problem by causing me and my family significant problems, for what looks like purely political reasons, lying all along about the impacts, and you wonder why I got angry? An “elucidated” useful idiot tells me that I never had it so good as obamacare – that I shouldn’t believe my own eyes – and you wonder why I got angry? This whole mess makes me feel like Auntie Em in the Wizard of Oz”: Almira Gulch …for years I’ve been dying to tell you what I thought of you! And now… well, being a Christian woman, I can’t say it!”

          • Uh, I think we really must wait to see how the exchanges work next year. Unless you are in a state where a Republican legislature is going to fight it tooth and nail, it is going to work, in my opinion. In the last year, health insurance rates have only increase 1.3%, the lowest rates in 50 years. In Oregon and California right now, the rates for a “Silver plan” for a 40 year old will be between $248 and $320 a month. What has your state developed with the exchanges?

          • Everything said to sell it to us has IN FACT proven to be false by the liar in chief. It’d be easier to count the “truths” on one hand that has came from his mouth than count the mind numbing LIES he has been publicly caught in. Get off the computer, Jay Carney, and go home already. You need to get rested up because for the rest of the year, you’ll be covering up the crap he tries to shove down our throats every second of the day.

          • Dave, you sound a tiny bit frustrated. Sounds like you cannot get past the “liar” thing. The good news for you is that you only have three years of Obama and then he is done. More good news, too. We are going to elect another caucasian in 2016! Cool, huh? Do you think the Republicans will try and embrace US women and latino issues or are they just going to concede the election to Hillary?

          • hey jerk, we are days away from this mess and everything sold to the people has been a lie., including your numbers in regards to the cost of a plan for a 40 yr old.

  25. The SCOTUS does not approve the law, it interprets it. Without money, Obamacare will fold. Obamacare cannot help those who needs it most because it was designed to FAIL so that a single payer system can be implemented. Remember, Obamacare is not medical care. Bureaucrats are not doctors but will be empowered to dictate to doctors who will then quit the profession. Placing your faith in a government run health care system is foolish at best, naïve and childish.
