Conservative Sentinels Stand Guard for Freedom

Sentinel: A person stationed as a guard to prevent a surprise attack.

This week we announced the 29 members of Congress — 6 Senators and 23 Representatives — who achieved Sentinel status by scoring a 90% or higher on our legislative scorecard in the 112th Congress.  These Sentinels are a critical component of conservative successes, representing the “tip of the spear in Washington.”

Heritage Action CEO Michael A. Needham praised the work of these lawmakers:

Americans worried about our country’s future should sleep better at night knowing a dedicated group of lawmakers are fighting for freedom every day in Washington.  We congratulate these Sentinels who stood guard, vigilantly protecting our freedoms during the 112th Congress.  Not only did they advance the conservative cause, but they also held back the incessant tide of tax increases, out-of-control spending, and harmful policies that breed dependency on government.  In Washington, this is no easy task, which makes these Members all the more commendable.

Congressional Sentinels are not alone in their fight for freedom.

Washington’s corrosive, corrupting nature can challenge the principles of many conservative lawmakers, which is why the Heritage Action’s citizen Sentinels do the “hard work of keeping Congress accountable.”

The Washington Post has certainly taken notice of our impact in Washington, as have liberals, conservatives, politicians, and others in the media.  We have no qualms about confronting lawmakers head on, regardless of their party, if they are not upholding conservative principles.

The Post piece suggests that this is one reason why we have been able to “gain a bigger following among conservative activists” than other institutions.  They add that we’ve given “activists a new sense of legitimacy and an institutional base.”  In fact, Ginny Quaglia, a Sentinel from North Carolina said, “If you try to debate an issue and you cite as your source Heritage Action, it gives you instant credibility.”

Conservatives now have the formula for success – unifying conservative forces inside and outside the beltway.  Citizen Sentinels recognize this and our allies in Congress – especially those who have achieved Sentinel status — believe that Heritage Action “adds institutional heft and sharp elbows to their own cause.”  Thus, we congratulate all of our Sentinels for their commitment and hard work.

It is nice to know that there are still some politicians that still believe in America and the American values set forth by our founding fathers.

SADLY, most politicians are would be plutocrats!

  • Bugle Boy

That leaves a huge majority that need a HUGE wake up call. We (the people) need to do much, much more if we want a future for the children.

    • Hugh Pecon

First thing is to get your kids away from the government run indoctrination centers masquerading as schools. Sending kids to these places should be viewed as child abuse.

Dang! Only one female on the list! Doesn’t bode well for my gender. I guess I’ll have to move back to the US and run for the House. If you want it done right, do it yourself.

Move to Virginia and I’ll vote for you. If you are like Bachmann, Palin, Jean Kirkpatrick, I’ll back you.

    • SilentCalFan

The scorecard is for last year. Some conservative ladies were added in the most recent election; e.g. Senators Debbie Fisher and Kelly Ayotte.

      • F15TSGT

We need more conservative women on Capitol Hill. I supported Deb Fisher in 2012. We the people need to put in more like minded people in office who believe in the constitution, rule of law, and bill of rights. God knows we have had enough of cronyism and corruption in Washington.

only 6 senators..no wonder obama keeps getting his way. and only 23 out 435..what are we cheering about? it should be 54 senators and 412 congressmen. we are doomed folks. hate to be a naysayer, but ‘just sayin’

    • AgileBulletDodger

Patti, I’m not sure what this data means yet but I agree with you, I’ve seen several instances showing horrendous voting records by people who I thought were conservative but who either didn’t vote on an important item or voted against an important item even though they were “Republican” (aka RINO’s). I recently sent a note to Heritage asking to outline the criteria specifically as follows:

“(1) How do I know whether any of my representatives responded or just didn’t respond at all which may explain the 0%.
      (2) How can I better understand what is being asked of my representatives so I can encourage them to respond to Heritage’s questions more appropriately?
      (3) Are they responding to a survey that Heritage sends out or are your scores based on how they vote or propose new bills, etc. that align to the values Heritage deems important?

Please explain further or at a minimum, please provide a link to where I can get more details. I would very much like to hold my representatives accountable.”

      Lets see what happens.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NLORN6B3ZNGCAJTFHWWFUUEY4Q jong

It seems that they voted less than 90% of the time for what is called Conservative by the Foundation. As for the Foundation it is one of the only conservative think tanks worth listening to. That is if you liked Ronald Reagan.

Rubio & Flake, both selling out America by joining with Democrats to give AMNESTY to roughly 20 million ILLEGALS/CRIMINALS. THAT is protecting our freedom? What a f–king JOKE!

but for the foul language i wouldve liked and passed your comment on. i agree with you on amnesty

      • UB

Agree. Those who still wish to become part of this Nation (already here or still coming) are certainly not going to advocate its protection, and by letting down our guard we are selling out to foreign interests. We have a Dept. of Immigration so let’s put these people to work or kick them out the door. Fix Immigration and get it done! The current Dept. of Immigration is a bunch of useless bureaucrats collecting paychecks while failing to do their job.

        • http://twitter.com/AGary8 Gary A. Anderson

          Sadly, much truth!

    • Noni77

I’m not keen on that but collecting 11 MILLION people up is impossible. I say make them register, then call thrm residrnt aliens and FORBID the lawbreaker failies the right to VOTE for TWO generations. Only their grandchildren and beyond can vote.

Re: Illegal residents. I am very upset as we in New York never were polled if we wanted to be a sanctuary town, Village County nor State, we just became one. A high level of crime in our area are committed by Latinos, yet the info on the criminal as to their legal status is never given,m leaving use blind in forming an informed opinion based on facts. I hear or read some statics once in a while of the high rate of Latino prisioners. We on Long Island are fighting the Latino gangs (viscious groups) Are these people going to be included under the under the generic umbrella of Residents and given all the benefits of a “U.S. Citizen? If so the world ha gone crazy while at the same time we are going to prohibited to own a gun to protect ourselves. ( even though I never wanted a gun in my household!
The bio is nearing the popping stage and if it bursts because of this insanity what can we expect? If I may say only GOD knows and let God watch over us.!

        • Blomsoy

Sorry, Mr. Ennis, I don’t blame you for being upset.
As a former New Yorker I remember when Bayridge,
Brooklyn, was a safe “Scandinavian” neighborhood.
Then it turned Puerto Rican and we also got

Russian gangs, and that is more than two decades

ago. Who can we thank for such conditions other

than politicians who only think of votes – and,
unfortunately, get them from mindless voters.

          • CelticGyrl

Kinda makes me yearn for the Irish mob and the Italians. At least there was “respect”. Of a sort. You didn’t go after a man’s family or arbitrarily shoot up neighborhoods to steal tennis shoes and crap. (Yes, I’m being sarcastic and oversimplifying the nationwide gang problems).

  • Pat Socia

Disappointed my congressman Henserling did not make ‘sentinel”. How can we prod him toward that recognition?

  • American47

Seems like we are celebrating failure. We may have won some minor skirmishes, but we are losing the all the battles and the war! The GOP becoming more inclusive is the dumbest strategy for success that I have ever heard. It is akin to “let’s be more like the democrats and maybe we can have some of their votes and then we can pass legislation to reward these special groups that voted for us just like the democrats.” The GOP tried this in the late 90’s and 00’s. Didn’t work. All this strategy does is give make the federal government more anti-Americans.

    • ste1021

      Amen!

    • Blomsoy

So right, American47. We see it locally where good old boys RINOS
have been running the party for ages. We do need the
tea partiers to be active and work hard locally. In our county
we finally managed to get rid of the old RINOS and get a
young conservative as Chairman.with an overwhelming
majority which showed the membership’s dissatisfaction
with the old guard. When they finally had a choice, they
      spoke. Go for it !

      • VisitorOnly

Right on. Tea partiers, yes, plus evangelicals, fiscal libertarians, conservatives of all colors and stripes, and more young people. We did the same thing – and have doubled or tripled our turnout to Republican conventions. Work hard! We just also won leadership in the state legislature – and a Republican governor. Elect as many conservatives as you can, and hold the “establishment” accountable. It works, but it means if you care, you must be involved and doing, not just talking.

  • Frank_O

Interesting, all the “Sentinels” are Republican. But I’m a bit skeptical that these politicians are really committed to a small, limited, Constitutional Federal Government, a balanced budget asap, an end to the USA being the “world’s policeman” at our expense & and a restoration of our God given (& Constitutionally protected) liberties. Even some of these have voted for a continuation of our out-of-control welfare/warfare/police state headed rapidly towards national bankruptcy & a worthless US Dollar.

    • http://www.facebook.com/melanie.l.branham Melanie LeBato Branham

Would these Sentinels be Democrats instead????

    • VisitorOnly

Frank – If the candidate you want to vote for doesn’t exist, then run yourself or find someone you can support to do it. You can only vote for candidates who will actually take a position and can win elections. These people at least did that!

  • smilingavenger

It’s about time something is being done to combat the tide of hi-tech liberals. Conservatives lost the most critical election of the Republic due to terrible communication infrastructure. Now we are in rapid decline and tyranny is here. It’s probably too late now, but at least we can go down swingin’.

Hmmmmmmm…no democommies I see. Wonder why. Sorry to say that Joe Walsh lost to Tamminy Duckworth (Obamma mouthpiece) last election and you’ll never see her on this list…..poor Illinois………..broke and not smart enough to know it.

    • Jean

What is not generally known was a big push by a Muslim organization to get all of the Muslims to vote for Duckworth because Joe Wash called them for what they are. They claimed victory so score one for the Muslims in our national election. Now this gives Duckworth a national stage to parade her artificial legs to the world. Though regretting her serious injury, she turned a lot of us off by not wearing slacks as most amputees would have. But then, she is a democrat and they will use any thing they can to sway people to vote for them like vote buying with our tax dollars.

I’m very concerned about the Congressmen and Senators from my state that have a 0% ranking because I’m fairly certain they are very conservative and I’ve been in touch with them on a regular basis. Maybe they’re not Sentinel material but they certainly shouldn’t be at 0% – which begs the question… how is this ranked and what criteria is being used to determine this. I want to know so I can pester the heck out of these guys if they’re asleep at the wheel.

    CRONY CAPITALISM

As I read this article about the 29 conservative sentinels who stand guard over or freedoms, I can’t help but recall another article I read about one of these marvelous sentinels, Senator Orin Hatch. He along with Mitch McConnell and Max Baucus just cost the American taxpayers a one half billion tax loophole concession to the worlds largest pharmaceutical maker Amgen. According to the article, they were instrumental in slipping in a provision in the “fiscal cliff” legislation “that gives the company two more years of relief from Medicare cost controls for certain drugs used by patients who are on kidney dialysis, including a pill called Sensipar, manufactured by Amgen.” The article goes on to detail the 74 Amgen lobbyists including two of whom were chiefs of staff for McConnell and Baucus, and the campaign contributions that each of the three

    • http://twitter.com/Captneal Neal Clacher

One of the big problems i DC, 7 of Harry Reids relatives are lobbyists, Trent Lotts family are lobbyists and the list goes on most of the Senators have family in the lobbying sink hole

    • VisitorOnly

Orrin Hatch is a longtime politician, so he has learned to play the Washington survival game. Until a critical mass of conservatives get more control, the lobbying game will go on – there are not enough yet, but don’t give up. Before you can change the culture, you have to get a majority. This is a wedge group – that is the point of calling them “Sentinals”. Appreciate Hatch for what he is doing with most of his positions and votes.

This list shows that the Democrats don’t really care about the well-being of America or its citizens.

So why have the “sentinels” been sound asleep about allowing a dog-eatin’ foreign national usurp the presidency? They should be calling for a hearing to REMOVE the foreigner. Not impeachment. For a non-U.S. citizen isn’t constitutionally entitled to impeachment proceedings. Only to prosecution and, if not executed like the Rosenbergs, deportation following a lengthy prison term.

This should 100% of the Republicans. Those not on this list need to be voted out. They are the real problem. When John Boehner is not on this list shows that we will never get anything done to save our country.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michael-Baker/1455644959 Michael Baker

Didn’t Marco Rubio just sign on to the amnesty bill? If so, that would take him off your list and make him a member of the LARD Party. You see, this is no longer a two party country. There is now only one party made up of Democrat and Republican big government Liberals; a party whose only goal is to use taxpayer dollars to buy and keep political power. Let’s call it the “Liberal American Republican Democrat party” or LARD party for short. It is the purpose of the LARD Party to spend the country out of business while centralizing all power in the hands of the Federal government
and depriving The People of their rights. The head of the LARD party is
president Obama while John Boehner, Harry Reid, John Kerry, Hillary Clinton,
Karl Rove, John McCain, Nancy Pelosi, Mitt Romney, Chris Christie, Mitch
McConnell and Al Gore are all prominent members. In this, the 24th year of the
Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama Administration, a vacuum exists; there is no party
which represents smaller government and a limit to spending. As nature abhors a
vacuum, some party will emerge to fill the void. Perhaps it will be the Tea
Party or perhaps something which has yet to emerge. Perhaps it will happen
before what is left of the country and the remaining rights of The People are
gone. If Marco Rubio has joined McCain’s latest attempt to grant amnesty for illegal immigrants then he is a member of the LARD party and not worthy of being called a Conservative. I hope I’m wrong but there it is.

I’d like to know more about how this score is calculated. When I go to the page for my congressman (Duncan Hunter, score 50%), I find only two “key votes” listed and no “sponsorships.” Am I to understand that this score is based on two House votes only? If so, then I can’t say I see much value in the scorecard: two votes is far from a comprehensive sample. If other votes have been calculated in, where are they listed?

Nice to see but I’m still disappointed with the Republican attitude. Doesn’t anyone from the conservative side have backbone?

    • VisitorOnly

Did you read the article?! What “Republican attitude” – the one that is fighting the President at every turn? Halting Senate nominations? Calling the Secretary of State to account for Benghazi? Boehner refused to continue to negotiate with President Obama on fiscal policy – isn’t that “backbone”. Why this “all or nothing” attitude?

  • DLT

STOP. Think about the Platform. We should be focused on what WE want, not the personality of WHO is representing us. STOP. What happened to collaborative efforts to define the people’s priorities and promulgate policy? Who are we? What do WE want? This is where we should be focusing our efforts, not on a blanket policy of inclusion to grow a body politic without defined values or current priorities.

Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) have already come out for Amnesty. Which means they are just as committed as Obama is to the self destruction of our Country. Instead of fighting against this very bad legislation, they surrender and jump on the Amnesty band wagon. They are on my list also as RINO’s!

The ‘career neocoms’ in Congress are strictly out for themselves, they are not there for WE THE PEOPLE. BRAVO for the 29 Sentinels but that is a drop in the bucket and they are not going to be able to pull us out of this mess. And if Americans keep their head in the sand then we are going to loose this Republic forever come the 2016 presidential election if not before. I have never felt so discouraged over this country’s politics.

I firmly believe that people have a right to self govern. Their are enough people that prefer circumvention of the constitution for a socialist government that we should allow them and their president to secede from the Union and have two countries, the United States and the United Socialist States of America. I’m sick and tired of electing people to office and then have to pay money to watch groups to make sure that they do their jobs and fulfill their oaths. Our government has been so corrupt for years and there are so many things that need fixing that can’t be fixed while our current situation exists. We can take advantage of the split to redefine right and wrong for our leaders, overhaul our tax system, curtail the banking and insurance industries that force us to spend the majority of our paychecks on intangible ‘products’ and live better more productive lives. All of our problems are traceable back to our highly educated leaders that have led us astray from the path of our founding fathers.

It always helps to see our Members of Congress graded on the way they have cast their votes. Of course, who is doing the grading and what their criteria are is vital. Everyone won’t be pleased in all respects by some of these high-scorers, but no one is perfect. But it helps to see who your friends are, and who, like Obama, merely talks a good story but acts just the opposite. Time to weed out the affable enemies and replace them with real conservatives whom we can respect.

Thank God for these Sentinels who have fought the fight in Congress for all Americans. We owe them a true debt of gratitude.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Donna-Casas/1530991238 Donna Casas

What a surprise, none of these people are from my state of California. Sigh.

  • http://www.facebook.com/patricia.scholes.1 Patricia Scholes

Our list is too small. It’s like we have one political party and a few rebels. This won’t work.

  • Elucidated1

There were others on the list last fall, but, uh, they had a hard time in NOvember. . .being unceremononiously dumped with names like West, Love, Lundgren, Akin, Mourdock, Walsh. I wonder why?!

  • chuck

I am happy so many from SC we had the guts to go once with these many we can find the guts to get out again.

  • Blomsoy

Thanks goes to the Heritage Foundation for this list.
Now to the other list, the “Progressive Caucus” in the House
which is said to number over 70 members. Our Oregon rep.,
Peter Defazio is on it, good socialist that he is, and working on
harming our country for 20 years. Is your rep there also ?
May we see a list of the worst Senators as well ?

  • blkwhtbeagleman@verizon.net

Why aren’t you a Sentinel, Congressman Bob Goodlatte of Virginia ?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mike-McDonald/100001261955661 Mike McDonald

Congratulations to the Sentinels! I regret that not one Senator or Representative from my North Carolina delegation made the cut. A few usually lean our way and we’ll work hard to replace those who do not.

It is sad when so fue care about America in our congress. I received a joke and pretty much say it all/.

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken
    fence at the White House.
One is from Chicago , another is from Tennessee ,
and the third is from Montana . All three go with a White House official to
    examine the fence.

The Montana contractor takes out a tape measure and
does some measuring, then works some figures
with a pencil. “Well,” he says, “I figure
the job will run about $900. That’s $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and
    $100 profit for me.”

The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring
and figuring, then says, “I can do this job for $700. That’s $300 for materials,
$300 for my crew and $100 profit for me.”

    The Chicago contractor doesn’t
measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers,
    “$2,700.”

The official, incredulous, says, “You didn’t even measure like
the other guys. How did you come up with
such a high figure?” The Chicago contractor
whispers back, “$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the
    fence.”

    “Done!” replies the government official.

    And that, my
friends, is how the Government Stimulus plan worked.

(proud to say, my man Marlin Stutzman is on the list!)

  • Robert Ell Tremain Jr

    Look bleak.

  • CelticGyrl

29 out of 535 is a disgrace! Congratulations to those who stood their ground and upheld their principles. I’m extremely disappointed that none of my MS congressional delegation made the list. Just confirms my opinion that the MS incumbents need to go in 2014. Also, surprised to see Rubio and Flake on the list, since they’re both making deals in the Senate for amnesty for illegals!

  • disqus_yAYWJt3V4e

Thank God for these Sentinels!! Let’s pray for them and try to get more like them elected!

  • DumpThaBums

Marco Rubio does NOT belong on this list. His is FOR amnesty for illegal aliens. He is just another John McCain.

  • bill

Why is there only one from ind and no senator ?????

  • http://twitter.com/ejtst Douglas Jack

Arkansan voters take note, not a single senator or representative from Ar. listed, we can do something about this next election.

  • Dwightmannn

It is not enough. We need to make every candidate face this kind of scrutiny. If they are substandard fire them immediately. We are going to Hell in a hand basket because of the way these elected idiots strut their stuff. i suggest term limits of one term. Taht will make them work so much harder to get something done. Time is of the essence . . .

    • VisitorOnly

The House already has term limits – one term is two years. It is called AN ELECTION. Do you vote every two years? The people who elected John Boehner and the others you decry are the ones you need to be talking to, if you want better representation from that state.

  • repubboy

Great information.. Were the rest of the Republicans ! Oh we all know they are they same as the Democraps. they just wear different ties. ! That’s okay We got their number, They will be challenged next time around !

We are particularly annoyed with the immigration system. We are not American citizens. We hold Australian/EU passports. We have two properties in the US. We rent one and live in the other when we visit. We have visas to come to the U.S. for not more than 6 months of the year, this means that even if we wish to stay longer we cannot and being lawful people we leave before our 6 months are up. On entering the US the border immigration agents are very keen to make sure that we have not stayed longer by even a day the subsequent trip or we would be disqualified from ever coming back to the home that we love and sent home on the next plane. We are almost always singled out for a bag search and questions at length about our reasons for coming to the U.S. so often. We are a retired couple, I am 61, my husband is 63 and we understand an abide by the rules of the immigration department but I just wish there was a standard rule for all. They seem to be over officious to the easy marks like us. While the southern border remains wide open and people who are totally undocumented are treated like American citizens.

None from States like MO, AR, AK, OK – too bad we need to get some real conservatives elected.

Those not on this list of Patriots should be fired.

What about Heidi Heitkamp SD ?

  • Elaine Thomas

This depressing minority of Sentinels is replicated in our educational system and in the media where conservative voices are suppressed and demonized. Until this changes little hope can be held that an informed electorate will vote for the best candidates.

Go South Carolina! I’m from the Mountain West, but I couldn’t help notice the “SC” next to the top names on each list. At least the voters there aren’t completely ignorant.

  • Goldie Jones

It is great to here that we have some that actually cares about our country. I am tired of the GOP rolling over and playing dead. Thank goodness we have a few that has a backbone.

  • Max Beasley

I notice that neither Senator and only one Congressman from Texas (not mine) is on the list. Looks like we need to do a lot of weeding.

  • TJ Wright

Thank you for standing up against the little people and promoting corporate interests We all know corporations are the only “people” now and accept our place as slaves to the CEO ruling class. Hooray for the sentinels!

One of these distinguished leaders, Joe Walsh lost in November 2012 because redistricting shifted the balance of power to the Democrats. What a loss.

Senator DeMint will be missed as a conservative leader within the Senate, hopefully he will ignite the nation’s wide grass root initiatives toward better conservative momentum as the new leader of Heritage. My congresswoman, Michele Bachmann is a rock star!

  • http://www.facebook.com/carl.harms1 Carl Harms

Your info. is incorrect, at least in terms of Sen. Flake (AZ); he’s a senator, not a representative.

  • jbhoffman52562hotmail.com

I am thankful for you few amoung us willing to “DO THE RIGHT THING” To not stand on conservative principals and to not uphold our divinly inspired constitution would be tantamount to holding hands with the devil. Believe me, you have it right!

  • Joseph McKennan

I am glad to hear there are other patriots besides Rand Paul. My opinion of Washington DC is NOT good. Anything else I could say is not polite.

  • gquaglia@atmc.net

Where is Senator Richard Burr (Republican from NC)? Words cannot express my disappointment in many of his votes. Not to mention his lack of leadership on his conservative votes.

  • EBurkeDisciple

I pray that we can elect a replacement for Senator Chambliss that will do Georgia proud and join the ranks of sentinel!!!!

Sorry, but that list lost all credibility with the inclusion of the TRAITOR to America Marco Rubio with an absurd 96% rating.
