Chambliss Signs No Lame-Duck Treaties Letter
In September, 36 U.S. Senators signed a letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) promising to oppose ratification of any treaty during a lame-duck session.
At the time, Heritage Action’s CEO Michael A. Needham said the letter would ensure “American sovereignty will not be eroded by last-minute negotiations involving lame-duck Senators.” He applauded the Senators “promising to avoid past lame-duck mistakes” and urged “their colleagues to make a similar pledge.”
Today, Senator Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) became the 37th Senator to sign the letter (though one Senator later dropped off the letter).
Heritage Action will continue to educate Senators and their constituents on the dangers surrounding treaties such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), and the U.N. Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat, and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (PoA).
