Our Spending Game Plan

Over the weekend at the Reagan Library, one member of Congress, speaking to his colleagues, promised: “This time, this majority will not falter in its principles.”

Yesterday, the day after the three day session concluded, Heritage Action’s senior staff sat down and finalized our comprehensive plan to ensure that promise is kept. I want you to be among the first to see it.

Over the next six months, there are two critical moments that conservatives must seize to live up to the mandate of the 2010 election.

Continuing Resolution: On March 4, the Continuing Resolution (CR), passed in December to fund the federal government expires. In their “Pledge to America,” Republicans promised the American people they would cut $100 billion. It is important that House Republicans keep their pledge this month and cut the full $100 billion in the first year. This is a down payment on the huge cuts and transformational reforms the country needs for its fiscal health.

The Debt Limit: The Obama Administration is trying to create a false hysteria about raising our nation’s debt ceiling in the next couple of months.  The nation is not going to default on its debt obligations if the debt limit is not increased, and there is no reason to rush into this important debate.  Congress should use the opportunity presented by the vote to increase the debt ceiling to get transformational changes which will set our country back on the path towards prosperity.  Gov. Tim Pawlenty said it best: “This debate about how we’re going to restructure spending is inevitable,” Pawlenty said.  “My view is, let’s have it now.”

Over the next few weeks, I’ve instructed our lobbyists to do everything they can inside of Washington to set the stage for winning these fights. I’ve also asked Russ Vought, our political director, to give you the tools necessary to envelope your member of Congress with our conservative message and demand that they do what is right.

Here’s what I need you to say:

  • Republicans promised $100 billion in cuts in their “Pledge to America.” We, the people, expect that pledge to be kept.
  • Congress should not raise the debt limit without transformational changes to spending—anything less is just Washington business as usual. We’ve raised the debt limit 5 times in the last three years. Simply doing the same thing a sixth time is fiscal insanity.

We cannot continue on the status quo.  The Washington Establishment and big-government special interests must take a back seat to the interests of our country and the American people.  Heritage Action will stand side by side with conservatives, as we fight to rein in spending, roll back government and restore responsibility to Washington.

Our challenges are immense, but so is America’s potential.  Working together, we can right our ship and leave our children and grandchildren a strong, exceptional nation.

Cut the US Office of Edcuation…students teest scores have been goiing down ever since it was established.

      Agree.

The problem with education is two fold: teacher unions and federal medddling. Defund and dismiss the federal Department of Education. That would be a great start in advancing the quality of education in the U.S.

I concur with Gus. You summed up the answer in the fewest words possible. Federal meddling has been the root cause in many of our problems.

You are right Gus, the Government has no right to be in any Educationor Union. The government job is to make decision if any can’t be made for the people of the state, not to become the problem and the people become irrate. It’s time for the government to see who is in charge and vote the crooks who has been in office too long out and vote people who care about the United States, not Obamas Socialism. United We Stand, Divide Liberals Fall! It’s time for a real CHANGE!

    • Rose

Yep, cut out federal support of heads in a classroom. Once you get the feds involved, it is like a spider spreading it web everywhere and destroying all in its path. Get rid of teacher unions as well because they are another large part of the problem. So many teachers are so ill-educated they are not able to impart knowledge, let alone math and science to students. So many of them are overpaid and give very little back in quality or quantity, thanks to the feds.

    • John Downing

100 Billion would barely scratch the surface. Let’s look at Senator Rand Paul’s proposal to cut 500 Billion. That would get into serious money that our children and grandchildren would not have to pay for what we hand and are spending on our generation.

I agree we should abolish the Office of Education. But we undercut our own arguments and credibility when we have 3 misspellings in 18 words, or 1 in 6 words. Fellow conservatives, please proofread your posts so we don’t look like we were “edcuated” by the Office of “Edcuation”. No personal insult intended.

Misspellings are a result of poor educational processes. We have gone too far from the ABC ‘s of true learning. We need to move back closer to the three R’s,and then we can at least spell the words we know. Of course I can’t speak with any authority since I only have an 8th grade education. But I do know there is a lot of wasted money in the current educational process.

        • Pam

This sounds like “blaming” to me. Can’t you take responsibility for your own misspellings? I agree that government needs to out of the education system. The federal government appropriates money for what they see as a need. How can they know what the needs are of individual schools? If money is to be given, it should be given according to individual school needs.

A paltry $100 Billion Federal spending cut is insignificant compared to out $1.5 Trillion deficit just this year & our overall $14 Trillion Federal debt. I believe we have at most 2-5 years before the US Dollar collapses & we have a financial meltdown. WE NEED MASSIVE SPENDING CUTS NOW (nothing off the table), a return to a small/limited/Constitutional Federal Government, repeal ObamaCare, eliminate Czars, end the IRS & put in place a Simple Fair Tax, end the Federal Reserve & have Congress return to “coining” (gold/silver) money & use Federal Reserve Notes to start paying our debt off (at least $100 Billion/year [it will still take 140 years at that rate to pay off the debt!!]), cut business taxes & regulations that stifle new business & job creation. Even then, it might be too late to avoid a financial calamity. But at least we can make an HONEST EFFORT to do the right thing now, rather than keep delaying the painful steps necessary.

I do not think a $100 Billion dollar cut by Congress is a serious effort to address the problem. We will have to vote them all out next time around & try again to get serious people in power to address the problem… but in 2 years it might really be too late!!

    • Barry

Dittos Frank! During the 1994 campaign republicans said if they win they would defund the National Endowment for Arts Who at that time was receiving $90 million annually. Well the republicans won the majority of both houses, but instead of defunding the NEA they received a $10 million budget increase!!! What a bunch of liars!

      I agree with Frank, and
I think one hundred billion is peanuts in comparison to our debt. Congress should defund many unnecessary programs and there are many to choose from.

When I was a kid I remember the saying; “A Million here, a Million there and pretty soon you’re talking real money.”

Then in my 40s it was; “A Billion here, a Billion there and pretty soon you’re talking real money.”

Now it’s; “A Trillion here, a Trillion there and pretty soon you’re talking real money.”

Our Federal Government has long over stepped it’s original mandate as set forth in the Constitution for the United States of America. The only way we will get back to being the Powerful Nation we once were is to return to our Forefathers’ vision for America and return the Power back to the States. The Federal Government needs to be restricted to the Protection of the U.S.’s borders, Foreign Relations and to act as a mediator for disputes between the States.

We also need to reduce the Corporate Tax to a sane level and eliminate unions to induce Corporations to return their manufacturing to the U.S. so that Americans can get back to work.

Moneywise, after honoring federal government’s responsibility to our military (security), our borders, and our interstate obligations, then move swiftly and with firm resolve to apply the principle of subsidiarity: get out of the way for the states to govern.

Eliminate the Dept. of Education, repeal Obamacare–do not do what a smaller unit of government can do more efficiently.

Eliminate bureacracies, limit government. As you take these steps, you will cut spending, reduce the deficit, correct the vast overreach of Washington, and provide a lean, efficient government.

For 50 years we have been digging this hole, Republicans and Democrats. Our very survival depends now on tough decisions. And the sooner we make these the better.

If you are serious about cutting billions from medical costs without damaging healthcare at all, remove the requirement that every provider of healthcare must move to an Electronic Medical Record. This federal requirement is costing billions and while it would be nice to have, it is certainly not necessary for the provision of healthcare but before it is fully implemented it may welll cost a trillion dollars! It is something that would save huge sums of money without negatively impacting the delivery of healthcare. we got along fine without it for two hundered years!

It is our responsibility to pass on a healthy country to your and my grandchildren.Thius country has done more good for mankind than any other or group of others. If we get opur house in order we will lead the way for the rest of the world to figure it out also. God bless the framers for giving us this chance!!

What we really need is 435 members of the House of Representatives and 50 senators who have brains and think sanely about what needs to be done. The people above know what is right.
NObody in Washington has the gumption to start cutting the sensitive issues and change the mess they have made. I guess the Washington crowd is to afraid of offending someone.

      Dear me-lets not offend anyone.

The way to get legislators’ attention is to cut funding these extraneous agencies, Education, Energy for a start!!!

I wholeheartedly agree to all of the above suggestions. In addition I would like a law changing our legal system to a ‘loser pays’ system. This would put a stop to all of the frivolous litigation that mainly enriches tort lawyers at everyone elses expense.

    We are at a very precarious time for our nation. With our Chief Executive on the brink of creating another (Jimmy Carter) Iran in Egypt, his intentional reckless spending, his useful idiot followers both in Congress, the public sector, and the print and broadcast media;
Congress must, I repeat must, defund and nullify all that has been created by team Obama.

The government has grown so accustomed to depending on a deficit that it can’t be removed at once
but will have to be reduced incrementally until there is no deficit, no reason to increase the debt limit, and unnecessary agencies are abolished.

Social Security should be “means-tested”. Why do millionaires need walking around money?

All of these are great suggestions. I believe along with all of this, there should be a constant effort to educate the public. The lap dog press spends all of their time and effort misleading the American people. You can imagine what lies will be printed and said on air when the republicans start to cut the budget. All of the “starving children and killing old people” of the past will seem tame.
If we all keep talking to new people every day. Keep posting as many facts as we can on all of our web sites and of course sending every one to the Heritage Foundation sites, we may stand a chance in countering the lies perpetuated by the so called news media.

How about changing Congress’ travels schedule. Completely shutdown their Washington offices. Keep our representatives in their district office until they need to cast a vote in Washington. Then put them up in a hotel room until their business is done then ship them back home. I understand private business does this all the time. They can “conference call” committee hearings and other non-voting activities–I believe the technology is available. This gets them out of easy reach of lobbyists and makes them more available to the people they represent. I think we might see a propensity toward spending cuts and agency closings when a representative’s constituents are sitting in the outer office rather than lobbyists.

If Republicans promise to cut only 100 billions, they are on the road to ruin. Consider, fraud in Medicare is estimated at 50 billions. 50 more billions are due to tot type suits. 50 more billions are due to practices of defensive medicine due to fear of suits. This is only the beginning: A variety of “private” organizations, such as national-socialist Mexican organization La Raza Unida (sp?) ( Ther United Race), the Acorn (or its follow on) and perhaps 100 or 200 other get the tax money. The fact is that over 400 billions are “discretionary” expenditures, and our discretion should be to stop them all.

I agree with Joseph Farah, World Net Daily editor and chief executive officer, that we should not raise the US debt ceiling. Take this opportunity for the best chance Republicans have to use the cutting board for trimming the size of the Government. Stop the debt problem force the cuts to spending. DO NO NEGOTIATE WITH OBAMA AND HIS DIMMICRATS! I do hope my comment makes it into the mix!

Both Republicans and democrats that vote against lowering the debt limit by less than 100 billion should be censured and voted out of office!

I agree with all of the above and would like to add a possitive action. Remove the ban on drilling for oil in our northwestern states, Buying less oil from overseas will keep billions of dollars here, create jobs, and keep many of those dollars out of the hands of those who want to destroy us

the Senate can start with an article that Senator Toomey wrote in the Wall Street Journal. He laid plans for not raising the debt ceiling and what and how to cut without defaulting on our debts. It was a very good start.

Funny how all the talk about education never seems to involve the students anymore while we are busy trying to do the impossible,,,buying an education for them. When will these leaders wake up to reality. Trillions spent on education and the dropout rate continues to rise.
