The Best of the Forge
Mary Ann McCarthy, Brian Bowman, Heather Cordasco, Dick Manasseri, Katie Spee, Gary Kubiak, Traci Chadbourne, Jim Duncan. Eight conservative activists. Eight defenders of freedom. Eight Sentinels.
Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with each of these Sentinels, all from different areas and backgrounds. They all have one thing in common. They are deeply concerned about the direction of our country and are taking action get America back on the right track.
Rep. Pelosi cited the idea, apparently posited by “some economists,” that “almost nothing does more as an immediate stimulus than unemployment insurance benefits.”
Economists at the Heritage Foundation have written about this claim, explaining:
The theory behind extending UI benefits as a stimulus assumes that unemployed workers will immediately spend any additional UI payments, instantly increasing consumption, boosting aggregate demand, and stimulating the economy.
The House Committee on Ways and Means voted today to refer former Internal Revenue Service (IRS) official Lois Lerner to the Department of Justice for criminal prosecution. Lerner has beenat the center of the IRS controversy of targeting conservative groups for their political beliefs. Politico PRO reports (sub. req’d):
In an extremely rare, closed-door Ways and Means markup, the panel voted along party lines to send a letter to Justice, requesting it take the former head of the IRS tax-exempt division to court — though the Department already has an ongoing investigation on the matter.
Sometimes politicians use people as props. President Obama has done it before, and he did it again tonight on Twitter. The White House Twitter account tweeted out a picture of Mr. Obama with his daughters, Sasha and Malia, along with a quote from Mr. Obama saying, “I’ve got two daughters and I expect them to be treated like anybody’s sons.” He was speaking in reference to equal pay for women.
Interestingly, for all of its histrionics about equal pay, women working at the White House don’t make as much as their male counterparts. But more importantly, research shows that when you compare apples to apples, women are compensated equally to their male counterparts for equal work.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) 100% has some advice for Republicans if they are serious about regaining popularity. It boils down to being true to their word and upholding “principles we already espouse.” One such principle is their stance against crony capitalism, which was singled out for condemnation for the first time in 2012 in the Republican party platform.
“Republicans have slammed all this ‘corporate welfare’ and ‘venture socialism’ for ‘unfairly picking winners in the marketplace’,” he recalls.
One test will be this summer’s expiring congressional authorization of the federal Export Import Bank. The Ex-Im Bank exists to dole out taxpayer-backed loan guarantees to help American exporters. Most of the benefits go to large corporations that are perfectly capable of securing private financing anywhere in the world.
