Obama Wants to Reduce Earth’s Temperature By 0.08 Degrees… Really
President Obama’s recent speech on “climate change” indicated that there’s a lot he wants to do to prevent global warming. But what is he willing to sacrifice to do so? And – perhaps the more important question – will he get his desired results? Remember, in life, there are tradeoffs. A prudent politician should know this. Heritage explains that his plan will harm American families.
In typical Obama fashion, the President tugged on our heartstrings as he started his speech with grandiose words about the Earth’s beauty. He set the stage for us by presenting what is at stake, “beautiful; breathtaking; a glowing marble of blue oceans, and green forests, and brown mountains brushed with white clouds.”
All that beauty is what he’s set out to save, apparently. Next came the threat.
Mr. Obama proceeded to up the intensity, relaying what scientists began to warn us in the 1950’s – you might want to hold your breath for this one – if carbon dioxide reaches a certain level, rising levels might someday “disrupt the fragile balance that makes our planet so hospitable.” “[T]he levels of carbon pollution in our atmosphere have increased dramatically,” he added.
Having a knack for brevity, a mere 555 words later, he lowered the boom:
I refuse to condemn your generation and future generations to a planet that’s beyond fixing. And that’s why, today, I’m announcing a new national climate action plan, and I’m here to enlist your generation’s help in keeping the United States of America a leader — a global leader — in the fight against climate change.
What a hero!
He went on to boast of his administration’s accomplishments and applaud the federal government for the regulations already in place. He had high praise for his dear friend, the EPA, which has grown to unprecedented levels of power under his presidency:
In 2009, the EPA determined that [greenhouse gases and pollutants] are a threat to both our health and our welfare in many different ways — from dirtier air to more common heat waves — and, therefore, subject to regulation.
But no Obama speech would be complete without a call for yet more regulation:
Right now, there are no federal limits to the amount of carbon pollution that those plants can pump into our air. None. Zero…
So today, for the sake of our children, and the health and safety of all Americans, I’m directing the Environmental Protection Agency to put an end to the limitless dumping of carbon pollution from our power plants, and complete new pollution standards for both new and existing power plants.
But here’s the thing. Even if you, and I, and President Obama, and everyone in America stopped exhaling that dangerous CO2, and all carbon emissions stopped in America, it would decrease the global temperature by only 0.08 degrees Celsius by 2050.
Of course, in his quest to cut the Earth’s temperature by 0.08 degrees by 2050, the coal industry will be his primary target.
And here’s the tradeoff for that 0.08 degrees. Bankrupting coal will hurt American families. Heritage states:
These regulations are part of a broader effort from the President to significantly reduce coal as an affordable, reliable energy source—the effect of which is to drive up prices for American families and businesses.
Heritage has found that significantly reducing coal-fired plants in America will have devastating economic effects.
As usual, though, President Obama is willing to trade American prosperity and freedom for more government and bureaucratic control of our lives and industries. Another common practice for leftist politicians, Mr. Obama assumes Americans are too dumb to appreciate energy efficiency, which means he will pile on more energy efficiency mandates.
Mr. Obama may be insistent on waging a war on coal, but it will only serve to bolster his pomposity and please liberal environmentalists.
