Morning Action: Thank you, Dr. Feulner!
ONWARD! Today is Heritage Foundation President Ed Feulner’s last day in that capacity, and as he departs, he leaves us with an optimistic farewell:
I want to thank you for your generous support, of course, but more importantly, to tell you to remain optimistic about the future. Yes, progressives are on the offensive, aggressively trying to remake our country using a Euro-socialist mold. But this is why we must now redouble our efforts, not lessen or abandon them.
I know that as a patriot, you will do all within your power to ensure that our society will take back the reins from Big Government. I know that you believe in the enduring truth of our ideas of limited government, free enterprise, and individual freedom, and that they will eventually win the day. Freedom is man’s natural state; whenever he’s enslaved, all he thinks about is how to become free once again.
Hopefully we can live up to the challenge Dr. Feulner gives us, which is to “come up with solutions to strengthen the family, civil society, and our nation.” By doing so, we will fulfill the Founders’ vision for “a country of faith, family, and free enterprise” and “secure America’s blessings for future generations.”
GUNS. One of the blessings that the Founders secured for us in the Constitution is the right to keep and bear arms. Thus, it is incumbent upon conservatives to secure this for future generations as well and to protect this right against the corrosive influences of liberalism. Those corrosive influences are embodied in the actions of President Obama:
In danger of losing congressional momentum, President Barack Obama is drawing attention to Colorado’s newly passed gun control laws as he applies public pressure on Congress to pass similar federal measures.
This is misguided because the measures that the Senate has proposed are poorly designed. They will not serve to protect more individuals from violence, but they will have a corrosive effect on our Second Amendment rights.
The President and the Left have not thought these solutions out well. By way of example, the President continues to skew statistics on Twitter to fit his ideological stance:
FACT: Nearly 40% of all gun sales don’t require a background check under current law. #DemandAction
The Washington Post stated:
There are two key problems with the president’s use of this statistic: The numbers are about two decades old, yet he acts as if they are fresh, and he refers to “purchases” or “sales” when in fact the original report concerned “gun acquisitions” and “transactions.” Those are much broader categories of data.
Of the 251 participants, 35.7 percent said that they didn’t or “probably” didn’t obtain their gun from a licensed firearms dealer. Because the margin of error was +/– 6 percentage points, it was rounded up to 40 percent, although it could just as easily and legitimately have been rounded down below 30 percent.
In addition, if you subtract people who said they got their gun as a gift, inheritance, or prize, the number dropped from 35.7 percent to 26.4 percent.
The Second Amendment was put in the Constitution because the Founders “assumed that the federal government did not and should not have any authority to disarm the citizenry any more than it should have the power to abridge the freedom of speech or prohibit the free exercise of religion” and because they wanted “to enable American citizens to defend themselves against violent criminals.” Those two purposes are just as legitimate today as they were during the Founding; unfortunately, President Obama doesn’t understand that.
GREEN CASH. One California billionaire, Tom Steyer, who made his fortune as a hedge fund manager has pledged to spend his money to make “climate change” the top priority of our generation. His method for doing so will be to plow over – using his wealth – any political candidates who don’t share his views:
The goal here is not to win. The goal here is to destroy these people. We want a smashing victory.
He spent $126 thousand to oppose Massachusetts Democrat Stephen Lynch because Lynch supported the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline.
Though for the past 16 years there has been no significant increase in the world’s temperature, this billionaire is more concerned about so-called “global warming” than helping to create thousands of American jobs and by building what’s been proven to be the environmentally safest way to transport oil.
SEQUESTER. Did you hear that? Yeah, that was a sound of a pin dropping because the White House has gone “mostly silent” about the sequester this month. It’s proven too difficult for them to keep up their sequester act:
President Obama and agency heads spent much of February warning of dire consequences if automatic spending cuts were allowed to happen. But in a few select cases, agencies have managed to sidestep or delay some of the sequester’s across-the-board budgetary pain.
