House Cloakroom: January 16 – January 20
Analysis: The House will return from their holiday recess on Tuesday for a short week. They will vote on the appointment of the new Sergeant-at-Arms and on a Resolution of Disapproval for the next debt limit increase. President Obama has submitted another request for an increase of the debt limit and, as part of last summer’s Budget Control Act, Congress will vote on a disapproval resolution. This resolution must ultimately get 2/3 support in both the House and the Senate in order to override an inevitable veto to stop the increase in the debt limit.
Major Floor Action:
- HJ Res 98 – Relating to the disapproval of the President’s exercise of authority to increase the debt limit, as submitted under section 3101A of title 31, United States Code, on January 12, 2012
Major Committee Action:
- The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will hold a hearing on “Domain Name Service and Search Engine Blocking.”
- The House Financial Services Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit will hold a hearing on the “Impact of the Volcker Rule.”
- The House Ways and Means Committee will hold a markup of the Fiscal Responsibility and Retirement Security Act. (Repeal of the CLASS Act)
The Senate will be in pro forma session this week.
