Later this week, the House will vote on H.R. 2587, the Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act. Sponsored by Congressman Tim Scott (R-SC), this bill would essentially ban the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) from dictating where businesses can locate, expand and spend their capital.
The need for this bill stems from the NLRB’s lawsuit against Boeing for opening up a new facility to build their signature Dreamliner aircraft in South Carolina, a right-to-work state. Boeing’s current Dreamliner plant is in Washington State, a union state.
The NLRB claims that Boeing chose a right-to-work state as a mean to punish unions, which have gone on strike several times in the past decade and cost the company billions of dollars. The NLRB brought about this lawsuit after the decision to open the new facility was made. One thousand workers have already been hired in South Carolina, the plant has already been built and the local economy has already benefited from the expansion.
If the NLRB is successful in its lawsuit, then the plant will be shut down, Boeing will lose billions of dollars for the construction of the plant, and one thousand people will lose their jobs. The economy of South Carolina will suffer immensely.
None of that matters to the NLRB, however. They believe that Boeing retaliated against union workers, even though not one single union worker lost their job in the decisions. In fact, 2,000 additional union workers have been hired in the Washington plant. Apparently that’s not enough for President Obama’s NLRB.
Rep. Scott’s bill will make sure that the NLRB can’t meddle in business decisions in order to benefit workers. It ensures that the NLRB can’t adversely affect non-union workers in order to benefit union workers.
The whole situation has been a headache for the Obama Administration, because even the hint of union favoritism at the expense of non-union Americans at a time when jobs are so necessary, is not welcome. President Obama could end the entire controversy by telling the NLRB to stand down, just as he did with the Environmental Protection Agency recently. But he has shown no inclination to defy Big Labor.
Congress should pass Rep. Scott’s bill and save our country from the dangerous precedent the NLRB’s victory in this case would create.
