Hill Staffers Get Hawaii Vacation and YOU Pay For It!
How would you like a nice trip to Maui, Hawaii? Well, if you’re part of the press staff of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, you’d be there right now.
That’s because this committee has a hearing scheduled, in Maui, for 9:00 am this Wednesday. But instead of flying down Tuesday – or, just an idea, holding the meeting here in D.C. – the staff flew down last Wednesday. A whole week in Hawaii, paid for by taxpayers, for a hearing that could be held in D.C.
Not only do these staffers get a week in a popular destination, it’s paid for by American taxpayers. Chalk this up to government waste. The hearing doesn’t need to take place in Hawaii, the only reason for it being held there is because the committee chairman, Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI) is from that state. It seems to be an “oversight field hearing” specifically for Akaka, since no other Senators will be attending. So, instead of waiting a few weeks until every Senator comes back to Washington, an entire committee press staff is sent to the furthest state for a whole week.
Rick Manning, from Americans for Limited Government, told the Daily Caller that:
“It’s outrageous that Senate Democrats have so little respect for the American taxpayer that in the same month they buried our credit rating, they’re heading to Hawaii to celebrate.”
Taxpayers routinely cover travel expenses for committee staffers, but this seems a bit much. At a time when politicians of all stripes are trying to claim that they’re the ones really concerned about taxpayers, it seems odd that Senator Akaka’s committee staff would have the audacity to take a week-long dream vacation on the taxpayer’s dime.
