Senators Introduce Internet Sales Tax Scheme, Again

Washington — Today, Sen. Michael Enzi (R-WY) 60%, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL) 5%, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) 28% and Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) 7% introduced the deceptively named Marketplace Fairness Act.  The internet sales tax bill would grant unprecedented cross-border taxation and enforcement power to state governments.  Heritage Action released the following statement from chief executive officer Michael A. Needham:

“There is nothing fair about forcing a small, online business in Tennessee to play the role of tax collector for California.  Fortunately, the historic Republican majority in the House has no desire to sign off on a new, convoluted scheme of tax collection.  With the internet sales tax off the table, Congress should turn its attention to creating opportunity for everyone, not doling out favors to well-connected businesses and revenue-hungry state governments.”
