Hello Obamacare, Goodbye Health Insurance

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that 7 million Americans will lose employer-based insurance as a result of Obama’s health care law.

But, hey, it sounded good to a lot of people when it was being proposed (sub. req’d).  Remember Obama’s promises in 2009?

If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period. If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period. No one will take it away. No matter what.

He added:

My view is that health care reform should be guided by a simple principle: fix what’s broken and build on what works.

Simple, eh?  Well, it won’t be simpler for the 7 million people that will be losing their employer-based health insurance.

Tripp Baird Argues Against U.N. Treaty & Tax Hikes on MSNBC

This morning, our Senate Relations Director Tripp Baird took the conservative message to MSNBC. In a brief roundtable, Tripp countered the liberal spin on the U.N. Disability Treaty and explained why conservatives are still opposed to hiking taxes.

Key points:

  • The US signing on to this treaty won’t help disabled Americans any more than the ADA already does–and it won’t help disabled people in other countries.
  • This treaty would give domestic policy-making power to an international board in Geneva.
  • Entitlements are the driver of the deficit, and raising taxes won’t fix that problem.
“Good policy makes good politics.”

Farm Bill Rally Flopped

Yesterday, the Farm Bill Now rally took place by the Capitol Reflecting Pool in a last ditch effort to bolster support for the passage of the 2012 farm bill.  The Hill reports that the rally probably took place too late to rescue the bill.  A look at the photo-evidence shows it was also too short on one key element — farmers.

Perhaps this is because farmers have experienced record profits this year, despite all the hype and dire predictions.  Or yet again, maybe it’s because famers (and everyone else) can see that the farm bill is actually a food stamp bill, with 80% of spending going toward food stamps.  Whatever the reason, the evidence was clear at the rally.  Many farmers appear unconcerned about the passage of this bill.

Senator DeMint Echoes Call for Action

On Thursday, after the Supreme Court decision on Obamacare, Heritage Action released a statement from CEO Michael A. Needham, which said, in part:

“America’s system of checks and balances ensures the Supreme Court’s misguided decision will not be the final word on President Obama’s government takeover of the healthcare system.  Although the Court failed to provide a much-needed check on federal power, we have every bit of confidence the American people and their elected representatives will.”

A few hours later, Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) spoke at The Heritage Foundation and struck a similar tone, calling for the American people to perform the ultimate check on this law by ensuring we elect those in November who will repeal this law in its entirety:

Heritage Action’s Week in Review 6-22-12

The Senate spent the week mostly working on the farm bill, which we key voted against. But while they focused on that massive expansion of subsidies and food stamps, we worked behind the scenes to push out our other messages, including an appearance by our CEO Michael A. Needham on MSNBC. The National Journal picked up on Mike’s appearance, noting the hurdles GOP nominee Mitt Romney faces because of conservative skepticism of other elected Republican leaders in Congress.

We also continued to engage on the Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST), the dangerously-flawed treaty that would erode U.S. sovereignty by putting it in the hands of an unelected U.N. council based in Jamaica. Our communications director, Dan Holler, was quoted by OneNewsNow over the problems with the treaty. We also did radio interviews in several key states, ramping up the pressure at the local level of Senators who refuse to take a stand on the treaty.
