House Cloakroom: July 8 – July 12

Analysis: This week the House will turn its focus again to energy issues.  The main piece of legislation on the floor will be the appropriations bill to fund the government’s energy and water projects.

Major Floor Action:

  • HR 761 – National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act
  • HR 2609 – Making appropriations for energy and water development and related agencies for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2014

Major Committee Action:

  • The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health will hold  a hearing on the “Impact of the Affordable Care Act on Medicaid.”
  • The House Education and Workforce Committee will hold a hearing on “Innovation in Higher Education.”
  • The House Homeland Security Committee will hold a hearing on the “Boston Marathon Bombings.”

 

Senate Cloakroom: July 8 – July 12

Analysis: This week the Senate will turn its attention to federal student loan rates that increased from 3.4% to 6.8% on July 1.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has indicated he will move a bill to the floor that extends the 3.4% rate for an additional year.  The House of Representatives has already passed a federal student loan bill that reforms how the interest rates are set in a similar manner to the proposal in President Obama’s budget.

Major Floor Action:

  • S 1238 – Keep Student Loans Affordable Act of 2013

Major Committee Action:

  • The Senate Finance Committee will hold a hearing on the “Medicaid Sustainable Growth Rate.”
  • The Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Development Committee will hold a hearing on “Mitigating Systemic Financial Risk.”
  • The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee will hold a markup of the Employment Non-discrimination Act.
