UPDATE: Who Really Supports the NAT GAS Act (part 1)

The NAT GAS Act (H.R.1380) lost another supporter yesterday, bringing the total number of defections to 14.  With good conservatives pulling off the bill, it’s worth exploring who actually supports the NAT GAS Act?

You may be surprised to learn that nearly 1 in 10 supporters of the NAT GAS Act are also supporters of H.R.1084, the FRAC Act.  The legislation would place significant regulatory hurdles on hydraulic fracturing, a well-established technology that has been crucial to the natural gas boom.

Reps. Kathy Castor (D-FL),  Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO),  Gerald Connolly (D-VA),  Keith Ellison (D-MN),  Sam Farr (D-CA),  Bob Filner (D-CA),  Raul Grijalva (D-AZ),  Brian Higgins (D-NY),  Rush Holt (D-NJ),  Michael Honda (D-CA),  Daniel Lipinski (D-IL),  Nita Lowey (D-NY),  Nick Rahall (D-WV),  José Serrano (D-NY),  Adam Smith (D-WA),  Paul Tonko (D-NY), and  Nydia Velázquez (D-NY), and Del. Eleanor Norton (D-DC).

Why would these Members of Congress want to both subsidize natural gas vehicles while making their fuel more expensive?  After all, the allure of natural gas vehicles is the abundant supply of low cost of fuel.

They will claim the FRAC Act is a matter of public health and safety, but in reality, the legislation is a solution in search of a problem.  Last month, President Obama’s EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson admitted that she was “not aware of any proven case where the fracking process itself has affected water.”

Only in Washington…

Update (March 13, 2012): 12 Senators are on the Senate-version of the FRAC Act (S.587), including Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), who is a primary sponsor of the Senate-version of the NAT GAS Act (S.1863).

  1. Do NOT support the NAT GAS Act (H.R.1380). STOP picking winners & losers and let the FREE MARKET work!

“Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.” ~ Thomas Jefferson

    • The free market has done nothing to stop a situation where we send BILLIONS overseas every single day.

We own the gas. We have the technology. We need to switch and we need to switch now. Not 10 years from now, right now.

The consumer needs a kick up the pants and this act FINALLY delivers one.

  2. Eliminate all government subsidies. What starts out to be a seemingly good idea ends up totally distorted and riders are attached and legislators are faced with the lesser of two evils. Eliminate the evils, plain and simple.

    • We agree with you whole heartedly. Remember every voice heard from represents at least 200 others who have not spoken up. More need to write, FAX, e-mail, call. Let’s take our government back.

  3. The government needs to stop giving subsidies without asking the tax payer to begin with, it is our money not theirs.

In short government keep your paws off free enterprise. I Vote No !

  4. Natural Gas is a good fuel source.
But, I vote no on any government involvement with how to produce or put it into use.
For our free life in this great country, politicians get the hell out of the our privite business’s business and do what you were sent to Washington to do protect us from personal harm and protect our country from our enemies.

  5. People who hold stock in this business have made a huge amount of profit as are the oil companies themselves and they still take greedily subsidies that our stupid congress gives out so each will get paid back in huge campaign fund donations. Fortunately so far the press has been open and hones in reporting the extraordinary incomes which gives us little people a very good idea of how much we are over-paying and how we are being taken down the road on a very rotten bumpy ride. When they vote or agree to do bad things it is always for a very good reason, money or the equivalent. It is time we had a law that absolutely no gratuities may be accepted in any form whatsoever with heavy fines etc. attached to 1sr, 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc.infringement. Children must be punished when they will not listen and do right.
