Bipartisan Effort…To Waste Money

Last week, we wrote about the need to eliminate FEMA’s firefighter assistance grant program. Unfortunately, yesterday, thanks to 147 Republican Congressmen breaking with leadership, $320 million of taxpayers funds were restored to the program. This vote occurred on an amendment offered by Congressmen Steve LaTourette (R-OH) to H.R.2017, the Homeland Security Appropriations bill.

The federal grants – which are supposed to help prevent firefighter casualties – have been proven ineffective in reducing the number of casualties, according to Heritage Foundation research.

In order to pay for these useless grants, funding from the Office of the Secretary of Homeland Security and Executive Management, Office of the Undersecretary for Management, and the Office of the Chief Information Officer have all been reduced dramatically.
