Union Boss Warns Dems: Fight Harder or Else
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka has made the claim that Big Labor might not support Democrats in the next election. During prepared remarks, Trumka claimed:
“We are looking hard at how we work in the nation’s political arena. We have listened hard, and what workers want is an independent labor movement that builds the power of working people – in the workplace and in political life. Our role is not to build the power of a political party or a candidate. It is to improve the lives of working families and strengthen our country.”
We would love to take Mr. Trunka at his word, but given his past actions and statements, it is hard to imagine he would seriously consider switching his partisan allegiance. Look no further than OpenSecrets’s Top All-Time Donors, 1989 – 2010. Union donations flow solidly to Democrats.
If you need more convincing, look at the states, which are running massive deficits and looking for sustainable reforms. At a time when everyone is cutting back, unions leaders are stalling budget agreements by demanding more money and more benefits than those afforded to private sector workers. With battles like the conflict in Wisconsin earlier and the current charge from the National Labor Relations Board against Boeing, union leadership is losing ground.
If empowering working families and strengthening America is Mr. Trumka’s primary objective, he should reevaluate his current partisan allegiance because President Obama and company do not have such a plan.
