Driving the Day: Who’s the Fool?
Happy April Fool’s Day.
Press reports suggest a budget deal is near, but as we’ve heard multiple times, there is no deal until there’s a deal and there’s not a deal. Nonetheless, some folks are ratcheting up the extreme rhetoric while others are expressing a desire to move on.
Yesterday, the head the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) made an extreme claim. He told lawmakers, “We estimate, and I believe these are very conservative estimates, that H.R. 1 would lead to 70,000 kids dying.” From the debt limit and entitlement reforms to discretionary spending, we can always count on the proponents of big-government to double down on their hysteric rhetoric.
Then, you have folks who are ready to move on from this debate and begin focusing on the budget and the debt limit. To some extent, they are right. Last month, Heritage Action said the short-term CRs must stop so we can focus on those issues. However, if they expect to win on those future issues, they must win this battle.
