Untangling the Spin: Democratic 'Threat' to Obamacare
According to a story in today’s Politico, several Democratic Senators are looking to “rollback” the centerpiece of Obamacare: the individual mandate. But these Senators aren’t serious about repealing bad liberal policy or enacting better policy, they just want to win reelection.
Although Democratic Senators Joe Manchin (WV), Ben Nelson (NE), Claire McCaskill (MO), and Jon Tester (MT) are aiming at the individual mandate and other White House-backed policies, none of them voted to repeal Obamacare last week.
The Politico‘s Mike Allen has it right: if four Democrats “really commit themselves to gutting the mandate, it could represent a bigger threat to the law than the courts.” The problem is these Senators stood with Majority Leader Harry Reid in opposing meaningful reform when the Senate voted on repealing Obamacare last week.
These four Senators are Democrats from states that President Obama lost in the 2008 election. While they are up for re-election and looking for a chance to moderate, last week’s vote demonstrated their true priorities. Given the choice between voting for good policy and Obamacare, they made the liberal choice. While these Senators and the media look for meaningless chances to ‘moderate,’ remember how they voted when it really mattered.
